𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐬𝐭—𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Yesterday marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, and today, September 16th, is Mexico's Independence Day. As a first-generation Latina, these two important dates remind me of the sacrifices made for freedom and the resilience that defines my heritage. However, Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day are not just about looking back—they're about honoring that resilient spirit by moving forward. How do we carry that legacy into our everyday lives? For me, it’s about: → Embracing the values of my culture—community, hard work, and determination → Carving out space in new industries and opportunities → Blending tradition with ambition to create a path for future generations The truth is, being a first-gen Latina means navigating two cultures. Balancing the values of my upbringing with the opportunities ahead isn’t always easy, but it’s necessary for advancement. Every step forward is a tribute to the journey of those who came before me-one I don't take lightly. This Hispanic Heritage Month, I’m celebrating not just my origins, but my path ahead. Happy Cinco de Mayo. This day in Mexican history is not that important but it marks the anniversary of the 1862 victory by Mexican troops over invading French forces at the Battle of Puebla. The triumph over the better equipped and more numerous French troops was an enormous emotional boost for the Mexican soldiers led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza. In America, Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican American culture stretching back to the 1800s in California. Having lived in Texas, especially in the Rio Grande valley, we have Tejano culture which has been represented through artists like Selena, Eva Longoria, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. There is also Tejano cuisine or what has become known as Tex-Mex. Tex-Mex is what most identify as Mexican food across the U.S. and Canada. Few realize how much influence Latino / Hispanic culture has in the United States and Canada. One of the reasons why I distinguish between Latino and Hispanic is because Latinos come from Latin America and Hispanic relates to the people, speech, or culture of Spain. Filipinos are Hispanic while someone from Peru is both Hispanic and Latino. For some they believe anyone who speaks Spanish is Mexican and that is not true. Each country in Latin America and Hispanic nations have similarities in their culture and foods but are at the same time are different. We need to embrace that difference and recognize people from where they come from.

⭐️ Hispanic Heritage Month ⭐️ Yesterday was the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month of 2024. While the concept is known and well adapted in USA it is less known and adapted in Europe. It is a month to honor and celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It starts from September 15 until October 15. Why precisely those dates? The choice of these dates is significant because many Latin American countries celebrate their independence days during this period: - September 15: Independence day for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua (all of these countries declared independence from Spain in 1821). - September 16: Mexico's Independence Day. - September 18: Chile's Independence Day. October 12, which is Día de la Raza (Columbus Day), a significant cultural and historical day in many Hispanic countries. By spanning this period, the celebration covers a range of important national holidays and allows for recognition of the diverse Hispanic and Latino cultures throughout the Americas. I will during this month make this concept a little more known in Europe and specifically in Sweden 🇸🇪. Keep an eye out for posts and articles during this celebrational month!
