Thank you, A4LE North Texas Chapter and Huckabee, for featuring the Lewisville ISD Memorial Elementary STEM Academy and discussing multiple methods of incorporating STEM learning into built environments and new campus design concepts. This was a challenging project for Jackson Construction - ongoing during COVID, but we successfully completed it in 2021. This new two-story 118,762 SF school is designed to serve around 800 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. In addition to the STEM Academy, the school includes a precast concrete storm shelter that functions as a gym and also houses a back-up data center for the school district. This space incorporates three educational wings, dining hall / cafeteria, large open library learning space and secured entrances. Outdoor amenities include a large turf field area, basketball court, and two shaded playground areas designated to specific age groups.

Has Your School Gone Lockerless? I still have nightmares about not remembering the lock combination of my locker. And to be fair, they were narrow and it was hard to navigate amongst many students. With more schools going digital, there is indeed less need to store textbooks and print notebooks. I will say though that going lockerless might be easier in warm climates. I know students in colder climates are more likely to go coatless these days but do we want to encourage this? That is the only hiccup I see with this. Could communal coat space be designed? Do we have a coat check? LOL. https://lnkd.in/eSHM829V #schooldesign #lockerspace #teachingandlearning #students

South Oak Cliff High School was the setting for a highly publicized student walkout in 2016 due to the conditions of the school. Built in the 1950s, the Dallas high school had fallen into disrepair. KAI was brought on by Dallas ISD in response to community reactions and began partnering with community leaders and project stakeholders throughout the duration of the comprehensive project to ensure everyone’s voices were heard. Nearly all the existing facilities were renovated along with 60,000 square feet in building additions as well as two renovated learning courtyards that were previously inaccessible. The school now allows for 360-degree learning that can meet the needs of all learning styles. Since the grand opening, a new equitable learning environment with modern amenities has fostered an incredible community impact on the students, faculty, alumni, and surrounding neighborhood. The South Oak Cliff area has long been known for its passionate residents and their support for the school. In fact, the grand opening celebration in January 2020 included over 1,500 members of the community, officials, and alumni in gold and white SOC attire along with the band and choir in a march from the temporary school to the brand-new facility. This burst of positive momentum led to the SOC football team winning back-to-back Texas 5A-DII state championships in 2021 and 2022, the first Dallas ISD school to win a state title since 1950. The renovation has also led to more parental involvement and higher academic performance across the board. As we celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth, KAI is extremely pleased to see the positive change this multi-award-winning project has had on the community and believes it will continue for years to come. 📚✨ Celebrating the Official 1st Day of School! ✨📚 When I was in Kindergarten, my teacher asked us to draw a house... you know, a box with a triangle for the roof, a couple of rectangles for the door, window, and chimney. But I didn’t follow directions. Instead, I drew a floor plan – I was 5 years old. My mom was called in because of it, but when she saw my drawing, she realized I had drawn our entire three-story house in floor plan view. She told me that once I could pronounce the word 'architect,' I could become one. Since then, I’ve drawn countless floor plans from my imagination, always fueled by my passion for design. I even used to lay out the fall leaves in our front yard as a floor plan to invite the neighborhood kids to come over and play house. 😂 To celebrate this special day, here’s a throwback picture of my mom and me from when I was very young. Swipe to see how much I look like her as an adult! It's amazing how much our passions and looks can be passed down through generations. What are the memories you cherish the most about your childhood? Have they shaped you somehow in your career? Let me know in the comments 💙 . #FirstDayOfSchool #TBT #ChildhoodMemories #DesignPassion #FutureArchitect #BackToSchool #ThrowbackThursday

One of our client's campus had outgrown its facility, and a replacement was necessary due to existing site grades and other complications. Below is an example of planning for successful phasing to allow an elementary school to function while construction is being completed. * Phase 1 - Relocation & Removal, Add Core Facilities: Set a temporary playground on the ball field and remove four portable buildings to provide a two-story facility with core spaces and ten classrooms. * Phase 2- Demolition & Removal, Add New Classroom Wing: Begin demolishing gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen and portables, and relocate users to the existing structure. Core functions can transfer to the new facility. * Phase 3- Demolition, Add New Playground: Demolish the existing building to leave space for a new playground. Expand the north parking lot to provide parking for visitors on the south side, along with a kindergarten drop-off. New buildings will tie in with the existing kindergarten building to create a well-organized and safe environment for students teachers while keeping the neighborhood aesthetic. #VA_Architects

Helping Construction Businesses build sustainable teams across both White and Blue Collar and forging great relationships with candidates at all levels.
Hey everyone, let's chat about something close to my heart – the unsung heroes of hard hats and hammers! 🚧👷♂️ You've seen it too, right? How our youngsters get that sparkle in their eyes when they talk about building and creating? It's not just cool, it's absolutely thrilling! I get this warm feeling when I see kids swapping school desks for construction sites, eager to learn the ropes. Skyscrapers reaching for the clouds, magnificent bridges spanning vast rivers - to them, it’s not just structures, it’s the beginning of a lifelong adventure. I believe we've got this incredible opportunity to blend classroom learning with the raw, hands-on experience of STEM programs. Why not take the classroom to the construction site occasionally? When kids hold tools and tinker, they're not just playing; they're developing solid skills for life. Just picture this: Today's youthful enthusiasm could very well sculpt our future skylines, making them greener and more sustainable than ever before. Yes, the lego castles of today can transform into the eco-friendly fortresses of tomorrow. That’s the kind of dream we should all get behind! By fostering this blend of creativity and technical savvy, we’re not just entertaining our kids; we're laying the groundwork for a skilled and innovative construction workforce. So, let's get behind this movement and pave the way, one joy-filled, muddy brick at a time.

As the new school year approaches, the pressure to create a welcoming environment for your students is real. But here's a thought—are you leaving money on the table by letting your teachers handle classroom decor? One year, with barely any time between camp and the start of the school year, I was advised by a seasoned regional director: "To make a strong first impression on parents, 3 things need to be spotless: the floor, the windows, and… the walls!" The truth is, the walls in your classroom speak volumes. Yet, your teachers are spending time, energy, and your budget trying to make the decor look just right. The outcome? Often, it's mediocre decor that doesn't stand up to the wear and tear of active children. This is where you can make a smart change. Instead of relying on your teachers to handle decor, consider investing in durable, cheerful, and easy-to-maintain classroom decor. Not only can this save money in the long run, but it also frees up your teachers to focus on what they do best—nurturing and educating young minds. Take a closer look at your current spending on classroom materials and decor. You might be surprised to find that our solutions are not only more cost-effective but also help create a truly welcoming environment for your students, effortlessly. Let's connect and discuss how we can help you save time, money, and energy while upgrading your classrooms for the new school year. Your teachers—and your budget—will thank you! #preschooleducation #classroomdecor #Preschooldirectors #Daycarecentersdirectors #earlychildhoodeducators #Unstuckableforeducators #classsroomdecor ---------------------- 🙋♀️ Hi, I'm Rachel. Great work being done by Trust for Public Land Cooling the urban environment is good for people, animals and the planet
We’re thrilled to be featured in The Washington Post for our work transforming schoolyards into cooler, greener spaces: https://wapo.st/3TrQs2p #CommunitySchoolyards are more than play spaces—they reduce heat risks, enhance student health, support learning, and provide essential park space for communities. As temperatures rise, our efforts to replace asphalt with trees, shade structures, and nature-rich play areas is more urgent than ever—and our work isn’t complete until every schoolyard offers these vital benefits.
Why schools are ripping up asphalt playgrounds across the U.S.
