Morning Consult tapped the minds of over 3,000 employed adults in the U.S. to gauge the state of workplace trends in 2024 — let’s digest: 💡For the first time since we began tracking, remote and hybrid work have switched places in terms of preference. 💡Across the board, hybrid workers are the only cohort to see an uptick in engagement while it continues to slip among in-person and remote workers. 💡Gen Z workers report being less engaged with their jobs than all U.S. workers (81% vs. 88%) and continue to drive the quiet quitting trend. The majority of workers globally are quiet quitting. Almost 60% to be exact. They are disengaged. They are absent-minded. They are disconnected. This is what research from the past year has concluded, according to Gallup. When the effects of this figure were examined, it was found that this problem could lead to costing 9% of the global GDP. In other words, $8.8 trillion dollars. When employees quiet quit, a common reason is because they do not see much growth potential in their company. They do not feel that their role makes a difference, and much less feel recognized for their value. But they do have value. Their value can be shared, recorded, or broadcast. There are infinite ways to go about it, however here is what we found works. Building a platform where they can be visible, where they can speak on their work passions, and where they feel like they matter. This platform can be as simple as a page in SharePoint all the way to a Notion knowledge base. It's January 19th, 2024. We're roughly 2-3 years out of the pandemic (depending on when you starting counting). How's that office work going? Workplace culture good? Back in the office? How's that commute? Hybrid? A little of this, and a little of that? Still enjoying remote life, and meetings in your pajamas? What about those who never stopped going into work? Hospitality. Public utilities. First response teams. Doctors and nurses. Construction. How are things for you? What can your employer do better? As leaders, we need to focus on what our people are saying, asking for, and listen to what is driving them. After all, you hired them because of what they can offer your organizations. With a pendulum swinging between being a buyer’s market and a seller’s. We’re talking about humans not houses, so ideally, organizations and workers should be saying 'Help me help you' to one another, and prioritizing a sustainable future for all." I think we're in a transformative era for the workplace. We're not going back to 2019, despite some big company CEOs' stated desires to do just that, but I don't know if we know what we're collectively going forward to! And we certainly don't know how well it scales. It's one thing to re-structure a company with hundreds of employees. What about when there are tens of thousands? Can a new way of working scale???
