We must look to the future and not to the past. We have an opportunity to reshape and redefine the accountancy profession in Ireland. The amalgamation of CPA Ireland with Chartered Accountants Ireland will allow us to have a clear voice to attract future talent, a single Irish education offering in the market and all members will be subject to the same standards of regulation. I have voted in favour of this proposal and I hope all members will use their vote too. 😊 Jury Duty Served + New Friend Made 😊 Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in jury duty and it served as a powerful reminder of the importance of this civic duty in being an American. While many of us may feel nervous when that jury duty card arrives in the mail, I must say that it turned out to be an amazing experience for me. I arrived in Newark, New Jersey, around 9 AM and found myself in a bustling waiting room with limited seats. Luckily, I managed to secure an open seat towards the back. Another juror sat in the seat next to me, and we struck up a conversation. As fate would have it, we discovered that we both work in IT. Our conversations were engaging, and we even exchanged contact information. Although I was eventually dismissed from the case, I left with a newfound appreciation for the unexpected connections that can be formed when we put our phones down and engage with others. It's incredible how much more we can learn and share when we communicate and listen to each other's stories. The more we talked, the more we realized how much we had in common. So, the next time you receive that jury duty card, I encourage you to make the best of it. Embrace the opportunity to connect with fellow citizens and truly enjoy your day. After all, you're already there, so why not make the most out of it? Life is about more than just fulfilling obligations; it's about embracing the moments, connecting with others, and learning from each other. It was enlightening to hear from a diverse group of guests at our recent Maxwell Chambers roundtable: Unlocking Opportunities as an Aspiring Arbitrator. A big thank you to Hazel Tang and Darius C. for facilitating such an engaging discussion. My key takeaways:  1️⃣ There is no best time to receive your first arbitrator appointment, though it is rare if you have less than 5 years of standing.  2️⃣ Be kind to your peers as counsel, they might be the ones nominating you in future.  3️⃣ If you are not receiving speaking invitations, organise these events yourself.   4️⃣ Consistently update your website profile, CV and highlight your expertise.  5️⃣ Don't be discouraged by unsuccessful appointments. They've increased your visibility to at least two parties and their clients. I'm grateful for the opportunity to curate this topic. Back as a lawyer in 2001, I could see that golf was going to be as important for my career as doing a great job. The golf course was where client relationships were enhanced while hitting balls across a field, and where lawyers looking to impress their partners would limber up with all the golf kit to join in on special golf days. I watched senior women that were not yet partners become golf enthusiasts, and while I am sure some of them did like the game, it wasn't particularly inspiring to watch women play a traditionally male dominated sport to enhance their careers. Whilst the days of the golf course, or staying out for beers until 2am, do still exist as traditional ways of building client relationships, I am happy to say that these business development methods are outdated in many legal specialisations and clients respond positively to different and more modern ways of getting to know their law firm providers. The partners I know that are best at new client development don't just focus on a client lunch to ask for work. They build their relationships carefully, finding common ground, thinking about how they can help a client with interesting articles, providing initial legal information (without being paid for it), or preparing interesting pieces on new areas of the law or something specific to their requirements. They are in touch on a regular basis to continually build this connection. These partners engage constantly with their BD team and their lawyers to help prepare these articles, presentations and seminars, saving them time and knowing that it benefits the firm and the lawyers in their team for their practice to be busy. Their networks within their sector are extensive. And most importantly, these partners are seen. On Linkedin, at industry events, at in person meetings. And thankfully, not on golf courses or in bars until 2am. #lawfirmpartners #businessdevelopment #newclients
