"Veterans", to me, is a highly lacking diversity label. First off, people seem to mean "veterans of your country". Maybe someone emigrates after leaving another country's military or has been a child soldier or something. Hell, there's not even one military branch in the US. Secondly, the ideas I hear are usually "where can we find them" and "how do we onboard". I've almost never heard discussion on things like O*NET's Military Occupation Crosswalk used to explain specific job codes and titles used by military branches as examples to reference for potential role equivalency. Thirdly, and where I suspect I am overthinking: why are we presuming veteranship would be something with problems being constant? Where in this process is reaching out to veterans groups to welcome input? What events could trigger reaching out to the group for opinions throughout the year, such as changes to enlistment requirements? What about transitions from civilians supporting the military to other similar roles? Lastly, does everyone really need the conversion training? I mean, I'm not a veteran, but one of my red flags of diversity programs is seeing required workplace transition discussions without a way to prove you know what you're doing in that regard. This is all meant to be food for thought instead of anything definitive, and I'm largely talking out of my butt. Thank you for your time.

THIS 👏 RIGHT 👏 HERE One thing I learned during my initial post-military job search is companies don't seem to realize what they are passing up by skipping over the veterans. Yes, maybe some of our resumes aren't the most polished. Maybe we accidentally left some military jargon on it that we forgot to "civilianize." Yes, some of us may lack interview experience compared to other candidates. Maybe we're a little more direct (and honest) than you're used to. But these are some of the things you typically get when you hire a veteran *in addition* to what's in the job description: 🪖 Problem Solver 🪖 People Leader 🪖 Driven Professional 🪖 Team Player Hiring a veteran = hiring a force multiplier If you don't know what that means, hire a veteran and you'll find out. #NotJoshingYou

The Secret to Success: Be Confident, not Arrogant We all know someone with an inflated sense of self-worth, right? Self-confidence is important, but arrogance is a different game. Some veterans bring an elitist attitude into their new civilian career, which can be unwarranted and unproductive. During the #militarytransition you’ll encounter civilians with inflated egos and a lack of skills and experience to support. You'll also discover some impressive individuals that never served in the military. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking all civilians don’t measure up to your elite standards. When you encounter these top-performers in your next career, my advice is to learn from them. This #veteran discovered their new corporate teammates were smart and dedicated. In fact, some civilians are just as dedicated, disciplined and motivated as the most elite military. As you build your network, be sure to learn from others (#mentors).
