Earlier this year, John Burn-Murdoch, the chief data reporter for the Financial Times, drew attention to the widening ideological gap between young men and women. While young women are increasingly embracing progress and inclusivity, young men in various countries around the world are, concerningly, headed in the opposite direction. The potential ramifications of this disparity may hinder us from achieving a just, peaceful, and equitable society. This year’s #WorldYouthSkillsDay highlights the critical role that the youth play in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. It’s clear that we must bridge this growing divide with a skills development agenda that goes beyond vocational training, especially in impoverished communities. We revisit our own efforts in the state of Maharashtra in India with Mann Deshi Youth Champions, a 360-degree development programme that makes education accessible for underprivileged girls in their teens to early 20s who hope to enter civil service, healthcare, and law. Along with cultivating communication and critical thinking skills, this programme is designed to shape these young women into ethical, empathetic, and encouraging future leaders. Research shows women often feel less represented or connected to mainstream news topics. By diversifying voices and including a wider scope of issues, we can attract more female readers and viewers. Here are three possible solutions for news outlets to lessen the gender news consumption gap.

Inspirational Muslim women have made remarkable contributions across various fields, embodying strength, resilience, and leadership. Figures like Malala Yousafzai, who advocates for girls' education despite facing life-threatening opposition, and Ilhan Omar, one of the first Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress, challenge stereotypes and pave the way for future generations. In science, figures like Dr. Hayat Sindi, a pioneering biotechnologist, have broken barriers, while activists like Tawakkol Karman, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, have championed human rights and democracy. India’s 1.4 billion people make it the most populous country in the world, but with an average age of 29, it has one of the youngest populations globally. 18 million first time voters are taking their first electoral steps as voting citizens of India. What do young people really want from their leaders? What are their dreams and aspirations? How do they imagine the future of their nation and their place in it? These and many more such questions intrigued us. So we did a simple thing. Talked to them. We spoke to 60 young women and queer voters from 20 states and 42 Parliamentary constituencies. These are from cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru but also those who lived in villages in Bastar, Kalahandi, Palasa, Anantnag and Vadakara among others. They are students, migrant workers, and development professionals etc. The diverse voices that we captured were strong, assertive and brimming with new ideas. They quilt the idea of a new India.
