We are excited to announce our intention to share and compare the rich historical periods and events of Ukraine and Ireland. Both nations possess deep, intricate histories marked by significant cultural, political, and social transformations. By examining and juxtaposing these histories, we aim to uncover parallels, contrasts, and unique perspectives that can enrich our understanding of both countries' pasts. This comparative approach will highlight shared experiences and celebrate the distinct journeys that have shaped Ukraine and Ireland into the nations they are today. We look forward to fostering a deeper appreciation and knowledge of our intertwined histories. 1169 is a sad year for both Ireland and Ukraine. Exactly 855 years ago, in spring, two things happened. Ireland: On 1 May 1169 the Anglo-Norman invasion resulted in the creation of Pale, an English colony in the east-south of the country. Ukraine: in March 1169, Kyiv, the capital city of what was then known as Kyivan Rus, was pillaged by the prince of Vladimir-Suzdal tsardom, what is nowadays known as russia Both events marked the start of the empirical reigns that would only get worse in centuries and ignite the endless fight for freedom in both our countries.

Senior Fellow for Russia and Eurasia at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Postdoctoral Fellow in Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service
There’s been a concerning rise in populism in Central and Eastern European countries, as has been the case in Hungary and Slovakia under the respective presidencies of Victor Orbán and Robert Fico. On this episode of The Eastern Front, Giselle, Dalibor, and Iulia welcome Maria Snegovaya, senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, to discuss her new book, When Left Moves Right: The Decline of the Left and the Rise of the Populist Right in Postcommunist Europe. Why are Eastern and Central European countries seeing a resurgence of populism? How concerning is democratic backsliding and is the phenomenon limited to Europe? How is Putin using Soviet narratives to advance his agenda in Russia? https://lnkd.in/eV_9vNg3

The New York Public Library has acquired a reprint of Aŭhen Kalubovich's monograph "Мова ў гісторыі беларускага пісьменства" that documents Russia's war against #Belarusian culture through the destruction, pillage and exportation of Belarusian archives and libraries. As we see in the current Russo-#Ukrainian War, the destruction of cultural property is--and has always been--Russia's modus operandi. The destruction of archives and libraries as a tool of Russification operates through: cultural erasure historical revisionism and political control. Russian war against Ukraine became a gatecrasher of the colonial and decolonial discourses. I don't believe in "canceling Russian culture" as a working method, one cannot cancel a culture - that's true. Not canceling but rethinking, revising, and critical approach is needed to dispel the fog of imperial knowledge, that nurtures modern #Russian #propaganda and #disinformation. Join us for a discussion at the conference titled "Beyond Western Colonialism: Exploring the Impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War on Colonial and Decolonial Studies". This will be an opportunity to engage in a critical dialogue about the changing dynamics of power, identity, and resistance within (neo)colonial systems. The conference will take place on Monday, May 27 (14:00 - 18:00) and Tuesday, May 28 (10:00 - 12:45), and will be available via Zoom. Please register for the event here https://lnkd.in/dz4yHxqb Zoom links will be sent to online participants on Monday, May 27, at 08:00. Feel free to share this invitation with your colleagues who might be interested in attending. Today is the tenth anniversary of the occupation of Crimea by Russian forces. The official start of the Russo-Ukrainian war. The world failed to condemn the occupation and continued to engage with Russia as a reliable, rational partner, sleepwalking into the biggest crisis of global security in the 21st century to date. I was 15 years old when Crimea was occupied, but I remember how Putin declared the occupation as ‘Crimea’s reunification with Russia’. No one seemed to take him seriously, some even believed him. Putin’s obsession with historical revisionism was waved off as silly nonsense every time he showed his true geopolitical ambitions. In 2024, after ten years of ruthless war in Ukraine and an urgent call to rearm in Europe, everyone is now forced to understand an expansionist rationale, deemed dead at the end of the Second World War. But did this obsession with ‘correcting the course of history’ start with Putin in Russia? And is there a logic to the madness? To find out, read my first peer-reviewed academic article, ‘The Role of Pan-Slavism in Modernising the Russian Empire: The Slavic Benevolent Committee and the Development of an Alternative Philosophy of History’.
