"Competition medals don't mean anything; everyone has medals." That's a common sentiment we often hear. Most of the time, it's true. Many competitions give distinctions to whoever pays, with judging criteria that don't solely focus on taste. However, the San Francisco World Spirits Competition appears to be different. It is a blind competition where only taste matters, judged by an extraordinary panel of experts. "Many consider a Double Gold at San Francisco to be the highest medal one can receive in the spirits world, but there’s something even more prestigious: a Platinum Medal." It is only quarter two of 2024, yet we are delighted to announce our second major Award success. At the recent 'London Spirits Competition', Carpathian Single Malt Whisky’s Madeira expression took a ‘Gold’ medal, whilst ‘Silver’ medals were awarded to our Feteasca Neagra, Vradiano, Ruby Port, Burgundy, Cognac, Amarone, Commandaria and Peated Cask Strength expressions. The multi-disciplinary judging panel made up of 40-members, analysed entries on the basis of Quality, Value-for-Money & Appearance and so we are very proud that so many of our expressions were selected. Dr Nawaf Salameh, Founding Chairman, Alexandrion Group said: “The London Spirits Competition holds much importance for us, firstly, in terms of the diversity of the judging panel, pulling together many leading figures in the spirits industry from varying backgrounds. Indian single malts have outperformed global giants like Glenlivet and Macallan, securing a 53% market share in 2023, according to CIABC Office. Of the 675,000 cases sold last year, 345,000 were from Indian makers, growing by 23%, while imported ones grew at 11%. This milestone reflects the progress of Indian whisky makers in terms of quality, challenging traditional perceptions. The trend has prompted Diageo and Pernod Ricard to launch local brands. Despite foreign brands panicking, Indian makers dismiss Scotch puritans and emphasize the fantastic quality and experimentation driving the demand for Indian single malts.
