If we look at the four corner model, England's players are supreme athletes in the physical corner. Thanks to the EPPP they are also fantastic technicians. Tactically for their clubs they are also top performers. So why not for England? Psychosocial factors are more than a 'corner', they underpin everything else. So, if that bit isn't right, neither are the others. If you lack drive/motivation, for example, you will struggle to get to peak fitness or other areas of potential. In the past with England the issue has been fear of failure, now it seems to be fear of success - going a goal up and getting more and more defensive, choking. Choking in sport is a crippling form of anxiety that turns world class performers into nervous wrecks. This video is over 20 years old but still incredibly relevant today (apologies it is in 10 parts - follow the links for the next one) and one that I still use clips from all the time: Part 1: https://lnkd.in/dFq4sB59 If England are to progress they need to conquer their fear and "dare to lose to win". Come on England!
James Barraclough FEAR as demonstrated by the England team locks away your abilities. The more ways you try to unlock it the tighter the grip becomes. Ask McIllroy, he’s been searching for years now & has gotten further away. Football at the highest levels has become about data & measurements to give the illusion of control & bury fear deeper. Psychological/social is hard to measure so how do you know your positively affecting as a coach? Especially when gripped by your own fears, especially at the top levels. I use learning & our brains involvement in learning to help children learn skills, to embed skills & beliefs. Everything listed can be learned through experience, we need to start young. Unfortunately coaches at younger ages are neglected & especially grassroots do not have the skills or knowledge to embed learning or the psychological corner.
Yet if you believe what is being reported, not a single mental or cognitive specialist coach is out with the squad... https://trainingground.guru/staff-profiles/england-the-team-behind-the-team
Very good point James. Academies see its importance but in practice, developing and intergrating psychological characteristics in academies appears under weighted. Maybe due to its complex nature and the skills required to 'coach' and measure it. Its easy to place a number on physical attributes but less so psychological skills. As you say these skills underpin the other developmental factors.
Absolutley, attention on the past or future saps your attention on the present. Applicable to all of us, I think.
