Years ago, I thought, deeply, about “was I, a professional educator, providing enjoyment and/or amusement to my teaching, whereas my students would be attentive to the subject matter being taught. I, then, looked up the “root” of the word, “Education” to be from the Latin, “Educare” which means “to draw out, that which is within.” This understanding gave me support to recognize “individual differences” among my students, and “empowered me to, more closely, observe individual learning differences, seek help via colleagues and literature, and “that which was within,” was more easily accessible and present in classroom discussions and activities. “Entertainment” is an aspect of teaching, as well as “Education.”

As I end my 5th week at Brighton Grammar School, I reflect on what I have learnt in a new environment and with new challenges and successes. ➡️ Establishing routines has been key – especially seeing how much boys thrive on structure and consistency. ➡️ Personalised teaching works more than it doesn't – setting adjoining tasks that students of all levels can be supported in their learning. ➡️ And amidst the busy days, I've learned that taking time for yourself is not just important, but essential for maintaining balance and perspective.
