Merlin Industries, Inc. had their first PVC Membrane Training course yesterday. What are Installers Are Saying About Reinforced PVC Membrane? "This construction system is the perfect combination of strength and waterproofing, I think it's the next big thing that is going to take over the industry; it makes so much sense." "This reinforced PVC is not only watertight but also aesthetically pleasing and durable, as we did not want the consumer to frequently change out the liner, repair, replaster, or repaint the pool regularly." "This reinforced PVC interior finish is truly the best option for our new Pool but is also ideal for renovating pools as well. It's fast to install, eliminates the headaches associated with scheduling around weather conditions, holds up to freeze-thaw conditions and can be left without water for long periods of time."

Learning to distinguish between different types of wood flooring is an essential property adjusting step that takes practice. Did you pass our identification quiz? When it comes to most contemporary designs, the materials look & feel very similar but the sticker price varies widely! A misidentification could mean 💰 in under or overpayments on a claim. If the flooring is still intact during your inspection, ask the policyholder if they have a remnant you could look at - they may even still have the box with the manufacturer’s information listed on it. TIP: Spend time in the flooring aisles of a home improvement store to see the differences in person! Compare the quality, look, & feel of the different varieties. Take some samples home to build your own field materials kit too 🛠 CATI has training opportunities that will help you expand your knowledge! Hands-on instruction in our mockup facilities in Dallas offer intensive practice in building components & repair processes. Check out the “CATI Certified Adjuster – Residential Essentials” course or the “Field Adjuster Kickstart” training. If you can’t join us in person, CATI’s online “Essentials of Construction and Materials Identification” course is a great option for building a solid foundation in flooring as well as other building components commonly affected in property losses such as roofing, drywall & finished carpentry. Invisible danger: excess subfloor moisture poses a particular threat to the appearance of wood flooring Achieving a long-lasting, visually attractive finish with timber floors demands that the same basic principles of installation are followed as when installing other types of flooring. However, wood is even more susceptible than textile or resilient floorcoverings to damage from moisture, so deploying a moisture management solution can be vital.‘If unmanaged, excess subfloor moisture, the result of either rising damp or residual construction moisture, will cause wood to warp and attack adhesives, potentially resulting in the flooring cupping or buckling and, ultimately, complete floor failure. Safeguarding against excess subfloor moisture is, therefore, an essential step when installing this kind of floor,’ says Tim Green, F Ball training manager. In addition to ensuring a subfloor is suitably sound, smooth and free of any contaminants, including any old adhesive residues, it is essential to undertake a moisture test to check for subfloor moisture. The only way of measuring levels of subfloor relative humidity (RH) with accuracy, and the method advocated by British Standards, is using a calibrated digital hygrometer.Normally, a liquid waterproof surface membrane will be required to suppress excess subfloor moisture and prevent damage to flooring when RH levels are above 75%. However, the maximum permitted figure is 65% where wood floorcoverings will be installed because of their sensitivity to moisture. https://lnkd.in/exGSME9B

Fantastic article from Allan D. at BriggsAmasco. Very insightful and really hits home about the shortage in flat roofing apprentices which is really the same across the full roofing industry.
💬 Here's some key quotes from our first issue of 2025... P14: “Prevention is always better than cure, which is why the MCRMA believes there is so much to be gained by engaging with independent inspectors throughout the project" Carlton Jones of MCRMA highlights the crucial role of independent inspectors on roofing and facade projects P18: "We see significant opportunities for our PMMA systems in the new build market across both the public and private sectors" Wayne Chissell FIoR of WestWood Liquid Technologies Limited says there's reason to be optimistic for the year ahead P20: "Wind speed should be checked regularly and at work height" Following the launch of its Winter Safety, Marley highlights five top tips all roofers should follow when working outdoors in winter weather P24: "The industry has been somewhat lacking a document to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical application" Bob Richardson discusses the new Design & Installation Guide for Roof Tiling from NFRC and Roof Tile Association P30: "The actual origins of felt roofing date back to the late 19th century, a time when the rapid growth of cities and industries demanded affordable and effective roofing for flat structures" Justin Pitman of Proteus Waterproofing discusses the history and evolution of felt roofing P32: "In respect of the tendering process, could contract awards favour companies that have committed a higher percentage of profits to in-house apprentice training schemes?" Allan D. of Briggs Amasco Ltd looks at 'the challenges at play' when it comes to apprenticeships and skills P42: "Materials are getting thinner and purlins are even becoming lighter too. As a result, the yield of the steel may go down too, and this can create challenges that building envelope designers and installers haven’t previously experienced" Brian Mack of EJOT UK Ltd discusses the support available from the Applitec Centre team for those working on roofing and facade projects P48: "In older buildings and heritage buildings, some of the biggest risks surround moisture management and protecting the traditional materials that make up the building fabric" The team at A.Proctor Group Ltd. highlight good practice when converting buildings to residential use P52: "Effective moisture and vapour control is critical for rafter-level insulation" Bradley Hirst of Knauf Insulation UK & Ireland provides his tips for insulating a pitched roof at rafter level P56: "The colder months can impact not only comfort but also workers’ ability to perform, affecting their health, safety, and efficiency" Elle Clarke of Milwaukee Tool UK highlights workwear, tools and equipment to help those working outdoors in winter 📸 Thanks to Russell Roof Tiles for the fantastic cover artwork showcasing the Bute3 triple tile system. Todays retrofit lesson 😀 How many people live in an older traditional sold brick building and removed the old original doors now all lovely and tight fitting with no 'under cut' 💁♂️ An 'Under Cut' is the gap under the wooden door that is there in purpose to allow air to flow around the property 🙂 I used to think its where the carpenter didn't do his job right 😳 without air flow in older traditional buildings they suffocate condensation & moisture builds up and that's when you get problems with timber rotting, when hot air hits a cold surface the moisture in the air turns to condensation runs down the windows & walls, if old sold brick buildings are not pointed with sand and lime, the cement also suffocates the building preventing any moisture that comes into the wall 'Rain' that soaks through the bricks and in to the old mortar then is locked in, cement is not permeable or breathable the damp builds up and cant escape has no where to go, comes through the wall, I have seen damp problems in rentals that bad that there was black mould in the wardrobes, predominantly will find a lot of neglected older and traditional buildings you will find they are rentals. Older and traditional buildings are special, but some where along the line the information was lost and a lot of the stock has been neglected by people buying them who know nothing '(drug dealers and idiots') - not curriculum😅, when cavity walling was introduced all the information was lost with the masons who built them there should be manuals on how to care for properties' well now there is domestic retro fitting courses 😀 Where does moisture come from ? heat from body's, breath, animals, putting clothes on a radiator under a window, also house plants can make damp rooms worse, washing machines, baths & showers 🧐 How ever 💁♂️ All is not lost with mechanical ventilation, look up approved document 'F' 🤓 for domestic ventilation +
