Our Executive Managing Director, Paul Chandler (He/Him), this week’s Construction News Forecasting Conference alongside Swati Paul from Skanska and Tony Gates from Sir Robert McAlpine. Chaired by Sam Stacey from Stacx, the panel discussed ‘The Evolving Business Models in Construction’, focusing on the rapidly evolving role of contractors in UK construction and the innovative approaches being adopted to position the industry for success. Paul shared his views on the need for industry disruption, drawing on our Alliance model to deliver the Ministry of Justice UK's A4NP Programme - a culture shift for the industry involving transparent knowledge sharing between four main contractors. He also discussed our construction target of 65% Pre-Manufactured Value, which was put in place for us to deliver greater efficiency and predictability and with a default to use our Prism offsite manufacturing facility to support this. The biggest focus of the session was around technology and its enormous potential to disrupt the construction industry, acting as a catalyst for change in terms of project delivery and the skills we employ to apply it. "By embracing technology and the power of data we can transform the way we make decisions and operate - creating improvements in quality, predictability, and productivity. Imagine a world where we are able to deliver services to our customers which are proven digitally before any physical work commences, with defined supply chain partners, quicker and with lower overall capital and life cycle costs…I’m all for disruption – sign me up!" James Thomas the issue I see is that if anyone asked Paul Chandler (He/Him), Swati Paul or Tony what their thoughts are about how they can make their organisations more agile when it comes to procuring sustainable technologies as the vast majority of their employees do not have a technology or sustainability background or skills. There is no point in saying we have a smart building team of 5 when there are 5000 employees as justification one is smart as the systemic resistance to new ideas, technologies and ways of working are just attenuated in minutes throughout an organisation! It’s vital leadership teams in construction enable and place sustainability skills on the highest agenda otherwise they will lose their customers. At this years Smart Buildings & Sustainability Forum it showed how our sector is failing drastically in implementing technologies to decarbonise the environment and the pressure on all CxOs from 2025 is going to huge as their positions will rely on delivery and not discussion! Frankly, there isn’t enough quality skilled employees in the sector to allow a successful transition for the huge amount business and worked needed!
