BrewDog Co-Founder & Captain. Social Tip Founder & CEO.

Today, I have undertaken the Founders Pledge promise – a promise to donate a significant portion of any future proceeds from my BrewDog equity to help drive positive change in our world.   Since starting BrewDog in 2007, I have always steadfastly believed that business should be a force for good and my commitment to the to the Founders Pledge is the latest step on this journey.   For those of you who are not familiar with it, Founders Pledge is a ground-breaking global community of entrepreneurs and investors committed to using their collective resources and brain power to address the world’s most pressing problems.   As a group, Founders Pledge they are fully focussed on delivering maximum positive impact in everything they do by advising on, facilitating and maximising the impact of their member’s charitable giving.  Their team team use extensive research, science and detailed evidence to help identify the best-run, most effective organizations in all fields of charitable giving. Helping entrepreneurs maximize the impact that their giving has.   I especially love the Founders Pledge commitment because it means society is invested in enterprise, and enterprise is invested in society, and I fully believe that that the people who create wealth have a responsibility to society that extends well beyond paying their taxes.   My Founders Pledge commitment is also in addition to the 20% of my equity in BrewDog which I gifted to our amazing team members 2 years ago.   Furthermore, I will also look to commit to Founders Pledge in any of my future ventures too.   For any founder wondering how to get started with philanthropy or be more strategic with how you give, I highly recommend connecting with the brilliant visionary David Goldberg, and you can join this now 2,000 strong global community.   Let’s build a better world.

Hello James W. Glad to read your pledge - I am a founder (of three) with a New Hydrogen Innovation project -- In Death Valley of Innovation We cannot access Govt Funding - as they have Criteria for enetering Funding Competitions -- New Innovation is actually writing the Criteria Because HyPulJet Integrated Hydrogen Power Unit -- is totally against the Flow of mainstream - stuck. James what we need is a Main Investor to Crowd Fund on Crowdcube - we did not fit your Unicorns competition - we are a development company - with a 2 years period of R&D at a UNi or Manufacturing Technology Centre - where we contract the new R&D engineering - would like to develop locally and include "New apprenticship scheme - South Yorks - also once initial modelling of the new type engine -to get Auto makers on board to develop their own version within their supply chains - if UK is to be part of the future - invest in innovation and develop innovation has to speed up -- a quick fund any celan energy to fail or success -- the wins will outshine the fails - but UK is still deciding what to fund and China has a protortype. If UK et al are going to compete with China we need a different means to generate Zero emissions energy.

That's truly inspiring! It’s heartening to see leaders like yourself committing to significant acts of philanthropy through initiatives like the Founders Pledge. Your approach not only underscores the role of businesses in driving societal progress but also sets a powerful example for other entrepreneurs. Leveraging the success of BrewDog to foster positive change reflects a profound dedication to social responsibility. I'm particularly impressed by your commitment to both your team and broader societal challenges. It’s clear that this isn’t just about charity, but about genuinely integrating ethical values into the core of your business practices. Best of luck on this commendable journey, and may it inspire many more to follow in your footsteps.

Nice one James. The equation for modern CEOS and business models = cover cost, invest in sustainability, build trust and stability for the community (jobs and smiles): Ethical business model and have fun. Charity is just a great addition and a lovely benefit to those that have surplus that can balance the circle of life. It should be part of everyone’s day job to give back. Keep up the good work.

I hope that there will be opportunity for small, community-led organisations to be able to tap into this and not just big, multi-national charities.
