🌟 As we celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to reflect on the profound contributions of Black American labor rights activists who have propelled the rights of workers forward throughout history. Their tireless advocacy and unwavering commitment to justice have shaped the landscape of labor rights and paved the way for progress in the workplace. Here is a short history on the contributions of just a few Black American labor rights activists: 💪🏿 One iconic figure is A. Philip Randolph, a trailblazing leader who organized the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first predominantly Black labor union. His courageous efforts challenged racial discrimination and improved working conditions for thousands of African American railway workers. 💪🏿 We also honor the legacy of Bayard Rustin, a visionary strategist and key architect of the Civil Rights Movement. Rustin played a pivotal role in organizing the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, advocating for economic justice and employment opportunities for all Americans. 💪🏿 Additionally, we recognize the groundbreaking work of Lucy Parsons, an influential labor organizer and advocate for the rights of workers, particularly African American and immigrant laborers, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her fearless activism laid the groundwork for labor movements striving for equality and fair treatment in the workplace. As we commemorate Black History Month, let us not only celebrate the achievements of these remarkable individuals but also reaffirm our commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace. Their legacies remind us that the fight for labor rights is inseparable from the struggle for racial justice. It's Black History month and I wanted to talk about allyship in the workplace, especially given the rise in anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) laws. Since 2023, at least 65 anti-DEI bills have been introduced, restricting DEI offices, banning mandatory diversity training, and limiting the consideration of diversity in hiring and admissions. Six states—Florida, Texas, North Carolina, North Dakota, Tennessee, and most recently Utah—have enacted these laws. These efforts have been a huge step backwards. Now, more than ever, allies must embody true allyship through actionable support, questioning regressive laws, and breaking down barriers rather than maintaining the status quo. Promoting positive advocacy and change involves uncomfortable conversations about differences, fostering awareness, appreciation, and understanding. For companies with locations in affected states, it's an opportunity to reaffirm your commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing organizational culture and core values that stand against discrimination. Happy Juneteenth! As we reflect on Juneteenth, it’s essential to recognize the ongoing fight against systemic racism. We need to amplify Black voices and highlight Black leaders, including Black women who have championed social justice and workers' rights. These include Rosina Corrothers Tucker, a key figure in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, who organized women in laundry and domestic trades. Sylvia Woods, a union organizer in Chicago, who united Black and white workers to improve labor conditions. Hattie Canty, a strike leader in Nevada, who fought for fair wages and better labor standards in the hospitality industry. Today is #Juneteenth — a day for us all to observe the end of slavery in the U.S.. Since becoming a federal holiday in 2021, at least 28 states and D.C. legally observe Juneteenth as a permanent paid holiday, but giving employees the day off is not enough. Even in 2024 — 159 years since the U.S. abolished slavery — there are still clear signs that our institutions continue to systemically undervalue Black lives and experiences, particularly those of Black women. Our research shows that by almost any measure, Black women are facing disproportionately high barriers in the workplace and, in some cases, are having the worst experience of any group. We hope that you take today to not just reflect on the legacy of slavery, but to take active steps to bridge the diversity, equity, and inclusion gaps within your own companies. Here are just a few example actions to get you started. How are you supporting the Black women in your workplace and bridging the DEI gap?

As we celebrate Black History Month, let's reflect on the remarkable struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs of African Americans within the labor movement. Throughout history, ordinary women and men paved the way for a more racially inclusive vision of economic justice. From abolitionists to textile workers, train porters to Knights of Labor, tenant farmers to auto workers, and sanitation workers to miners, these individuals embodied their commitment to racial equality. They united to demand a fairer, more just America. Progressive visionaries like Frederick Douglass, W.E.B. Du Bois, Rev. Addie Wyatt, Maida Springer Kemp, and Dora Lee Jones understood that unions were the cornerstone of empowerment and equality for Black workers. Meanwhile, progressive labor leaders like John Lewis and Walter Reuther recognized that the labor movement could only thrive with the active participation of Black workers. This Black History Month, let us honor their legacies and continue the journey towards a more equitable and inclusive society. #WorkersRights #EqualityForAll #BlackHistoryMonth #1u

Juneteenth - a day to celebrate freedom, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Black Americans. A day steeped in history, a reminder of the ongoing fight for racial equality and a call to action to keep pushing for a more inclusive future. Juneteenth - a catalyst to take action – to educate ourselves, amplify Black voices, and dismantle systemic barriers. As an HR leader, I'm committed to fostering inclusive workplaces where everyone feels valued. We can create spaces that celebrate diversity and empower everyone to be their authentic selves. I'm so grateful to work at a company that celebrates and recognizes the importance of Juneteenth, but let's be real, not all companies are there yet.
