Reflecting on Billy Shore's "Letter from the Cathedral of Milan" During a Karibu Ceremony in the ALX AICE program, I was introduced to Billy Shore’s "Letter from the Cathedral of Milan". The 579-year construction of Milan’s cathedral symbolizes how both community and professional relationships thrive on patience, collaboration and a shared vision. It taught me that significant achievements are not instant but are built gradually through the collective efforts of many people working toward a common goal. The key lessons from Billy Shore's "Letter from the Cathedral of Milan": ✔ In the letter, Shore emphasizes how the cathedral, built over centuries by countless workers represents the cumulative contributions of many people, most of whom never saw the final result of their work. Yet, their efforts were part of something much bigger—a testament to what can be accomplished when people work together toward a shared goal. ✔ The letter also touches on themes of humility and service. The builders, unknown and unnamed, labored not for personal recognition but for the benefit of future generations. This idea resonates with the notion of community-building in both personal and professional spheres. ✔ The letter uses the cathedral as a metaphor to illustrate how professional relationships and networks are built through collaboration, support and shared responsibility. Rather than focusing solely on personal advancement, it encourages contributing to the success of others and creating a strong foundation that benefits everyone in the long run. True success lies in collective growth and long-term impact, not individual gain. The letter offers a powerful reminder of the importance of collective effort, humility and the long-lasting impact of community-building, both in our personal lives and professional careers. ACG / The Vital Works. Vienna and Berlin, Psychologist and Systems Thinker, Steward of OD for Life, Time to Think Facilitator, Tender Punk
SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT A CITY I love cities. They are works of art and social sculptures in permanent transformation. Cities are laboratories for new ideas, new connections, and multiple futures. They are like human greenhouses where visionary concepts can grow. Cities are the playgrounds for dreamers and the canvas for innovation. When I think about my city, Berlin, some things stand out for me: Berlin has experienced both the worst and the best times in its history. It has tried to face the shadows of the past with honesty. Every corner of Berlin tells stories of revolution, transformation, and the indomitable human spirit. Witnessing Berlin's resilience reminds me that even from the darkest moments, strength and vitality can emerge. This city doesn’t believe in makeup, in making things look nicer, so sometimes Berlin can seem quite broken. Berlin feels intense anger and sadness, but there is a tenderness, a softness behind all these emotions. Berlin taught me that beauty can be found in the most unexpected places. THERE IS A PROFOUND DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BELONGING AND FITTING IN Berlin doesn’t force you to fit in. You can be who you are, born here or somewhere else; you belong to the city anyway. Berlin's vibrant spirit is a beautiful tapestry of art, music, and diverse cultures coming together. Berlin is a space where you can be productive because the city is challenging, exciting, hospitable, and tolerant. Berlin is a city forever reinventing itself, inviting me to do the same. Berlin's spirit is composed of resilience and creativity. I love to be part of this human work of art called Berlin. „First life, then spaces, then buildings. The other way around, it never works.“ Jan Gehl, architect Many songs about Berlin try to capture the city's unique atmosphere. Here is one of them….. PS Future Berlin must have more people spaces and less cars! We work on this! There are things starting to change, the city is transforming itself at the moment! #future #space #tenderpunk

Interesting perspective on the importance of opening up and making accessible our leading institutions.
“It’s very difficult to overstate the significance of the new Temple Quarter Enterprise campus. It will open up a whole new chapter of the University’s relationship with Bristol because it is coming down off the hill into a much more visible presence within the city.” Our Let’s Chat series shines a spotlight on the all-important stakeholders who form a vital part of Engine Shed. This month we sat down with Marvin Rees OBE, Mayor of Bristol, to find out what Bristol businesses have gained from having a mayor, the role of universities in supporting a city economy, and how the University of Bristol's new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus is contributing to Bristol’s reputation for innovation 💡 https://lnkd.in/etWGiWGv Read our other Let's Chat interviews: https://lnkd.in/ehHzpWyX

The #digitaltwin concept has been gaining more and more ground in #infrastructure #planning in recent years. This development demonstrates their added value in this field. While each of them is adapted to the needs of its users, all share the same principles of #virtual representation of the physical world. The digital twin model developed in Barcelona to test 15-minute city concepts is a good example of such a digital twin: https://lnkd.in/eCsKj2AA

This was an interesting and challenging project to work on. From my perspective, cultural strategies can only be effective if they come with proper resources, political will and are evaluated relationally as opposed to randomly adopted outputs. Otherwise, they perpetuate inequalities or become redundant. There are some emergent trends that we found in our research that suggests strategy development (and their lifecycles) could become catalysts for increasing local public involvement in decision making beyond the ‘usual suspects’. This is tentative, disjointed, place-specific and subject to power imbalances but includes elements such as participatory budgeting and collaboration with artists in the creation of strategies themselves. There is much that needs to be done in this space both in policy research and practice.
We’re grateful to be working with the Centre for Cultural Value on a major open #policy development programme exploring #devolution and increased local decision making. The Centre for Cultural Value is a research institution based at the University of Leeds, dedicated to understanding and demonstrating the impact of arts, culture, heritage, & screen activities on society. The team are working with us to bring cutting edge research across a range of subjects into the programme, including this paper exploring #CulturalStrategies. The paper consolidates current research and scholarly discussion on the subject and applies a thematic analysis to three micro-case studies of local authorities in order to provide an indicative set of implications for policy. With thanks to Dr John Wright, Centre for Cultural Value, and University of Leeds, read the paper here: https://lnkd.in/ebpj8NFp The CCV team have also helped bring in the perspective from the creative workforce – freelancers and individuals working in the sector who are too often left out of policy development, as part of this open policy development programme #FutureLocalCulture Find out more about the programme here https://lnkd.in/eXmmzyTQ #Policy #Arts #Culture #Heritage
