In 2022, the global hiring rate for women in leadership roles peaked at 38%. Unfortunately, it has since dropped to 36%, according to the World Economic Forum, highlighting a crucial issue that needs attention. Any story that celebrates women breaking barriers instantly catches my attention. Sawaka Kawashima Romaine became president of MIT’s Club of Japan in 2022- the first woman to hold the office in the club’s more than 110-year history. In 2023, she used her role to celebrate another significant female trailblazer, Ellen Swallow Richards, who 150 years prior had been the first woman to attend and earn a degree from the Institute! Women in Leadership: African Women Breaking Barriers African women have long been at the forefront of their communities, playing vital roles in the socio-economic, political, and cultural spheres. Today, their contributions are increasingly recognised, and their leadership roles are expanding across various sectors.

What is Irvine’s and philanthropy’s role in advancing gender equity?     Irvine’s Robia Lee believes that, “Equity starts with identifying and dismantling barriers. It is about putting in place structures that enable women to participate in all aspects of society – whether it be in business or politics. I recognize that this is no easy task.
