ICYMI: Our #BetterCareers initiative recently provided a grant to Disability Rights California to support a landscape analysis of employment opportunities for Californians with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD). Given that people with disabilities are both disproportionately incarcerated and more likely to live in poverty, the analysis will also explore existing and needed pathways to good jobs for justice-involved individuals with I/DD. Vivian Huan, Senior Policy Attorney at DRC, said, “The systems that serve them are complex and structurally siloed. But they don’t have to stay that way. We hope this project can point to ways that the California’s public and private sectors can be more effective at getting people with I/DD the support they need, when they need it, to earn a living wage doing work that is meaningful to them.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gVpHYwp7

For years, we have been evolving our approach to grantee and community engagement, focusing on listening to our partners and those most impacted by inequities. As part of our equity efforts, we engaged a group of grantees early in the development of a new grantmaking strategy focused on statewide policy and systems change, which ultimately became the Just Prosperity initiative. We took a deeply collaborative approach to defining shared objectives and strategies, while openly addressing areas of divergence—an approach that shifts away from traditional foundation practices. As one design circle grantee noted: “I think what made this unique was that it wasn’t one-off. It was really a process of consulting and seeking input from folks on the ground that felt more authentic and rigorous.” What made this engagement different, and what conditions contribute to authentic and reciprocal grantee-funder relationships? Check out this learning brief: https://irvine.ly/4dVa5Hj Irvine’s Jennifer Ho and Virginia Mosqueda, USC Equity Research Institute’s Jennifer Ito, and Engage R+D’s Sonia Taddy-Sandino will also share the learning brief at the American Evaluation Association conference on October 26. Our CEO, Don Howard, had the honor of moderating a conversation on the California Jobs First initiative, which supports new strategies to diversify local economies and develop industries that create quality jobs for Californians. The panel featured Stewart Knox, Secretary of the California Labor & Workforce Development Agency and Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business & Economic Development. Thank you to California Forward for inviting our CEO and putting together the 2024 Economic Summit! Hear more from Don below. #JobsFirst #California
Last week, I had the pleasure of moderating a panel at California Forward’s 2024 Economic Summit featuring Stewart Knox, Secretary California Labor & Workforce Development Agency and Dee Dee Myers, Senior Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom and Director of the Governor’s Office of Business & Economic Development. Stewart and Dee Dee are among the leaders of California’s largest effort to date to promote inclusive economic development by putting regional voices at the center of decision making. That initiative, California Jobs First, is supporting new strategies to diversify local economies and develop industries that create high-quality jobs for Californians. Most importantly, it engages communities to craft the economic future they want, rather than dictating it for them. At The James Irvine Foundation, we’re continuously learning from our grantees about the challenges and importance of community-driven economic planning. All the leaders I met at the Summit reminded me that there are committed and talented changemakers across the state collaborating to chart our state’s transition to a more inclusive, equitable, and climate resilient economy. #EconomicDevelopment #California #Collaboration

In honor of #IndigenousPeoplesDay, we asked the So'oh-Shinálí Sister Project (SSSP), a grantee partner of our #JustProsperity initiative, to share what the day means to them. Based in Los Angeles, SSSP honors the strengths of cultural teachings, traditional practices, tribal diversity, and community solidarity, and envisions that all Indigenous people in the county can engage in experiential learning that fosters access, equity, and inclusion. The value of long-term, flexible funding in strengthening an organization’s impact is something that Stephanie C. Brown, Senior Program Officer of our #FairWork initiative, often hears from leaders advancing worker rights in California. Known in the industry as “general operating support,” this type of funding gives nonprofits the flexibility to apply funds in the ways they decide are best for them, encourages creative thinking, and demonstrates a funder’s trust in a leader’s vision. It is also the type of funding that is central to Fair Work. Also central to Fair Work is helping strengthen the operations and programming of worker rights groups in the state. Since 2019, the initiative has invested more than $20 million in regranting, coaching, and technical assistance through a partnership with the The LeadersTrust. We learned, through an evaluation by Engage R+D, that it helped organizations deepen their engagement of workers and reach into communities, and improve leadership and staff skills. In this new blog post, Stephanie talks more about the value of multi-year general support and helping strengthen the capabilities of leaders and organizations: https://irvine.ly/3zH7Sl6

California is in the midst of a decade-long teacher shortage crisis. Since 2016, the state has invested $1.2 billion to address the issue, and while this infusion of resources seemed to help make a difference initially, there has been a 33% decline in teachers — over 5,300 total — since the 2020-21 school year. A proven option to address the teacher shortage is #apprenticeship. Through inclusive apprenticeship programs, participants earn while they learn and receive wraparound support, helping to build a more diverse and representative teacher workforce. An estimated 66% of early educators in center-based care, for instance, identify as people of color. In this CalMatters piece, Vincent Stewart, Vice President of Policy and Programs of Children Now, and Randi B. Wolfe, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director of ECEPTS, an Irvine #BetterCareers grantee partner, highlight the benefits of apprenticeships and encourage the TK-12 system to learn from effective apprenticeship models: https://lnkd.in/epMmv2gx

Due to systemic barriers in education, employment, and caregiving responsibilities, #California has the largest wage gap between Latinas and White men. If the current wage gap trend in California continues, it will take 130 years for Latinas in the state to close the gap. In this piece, the California Budget & Policy Center outlines ways to address the systemic barriers impacting Latinas: https://lnkd.in/geZh_vFF. These include raising wages in jobs where Latinas are disproportionately represented, strengthening worker power, investing in community-based programs, and promoting programs that improve the leadership pipeline for Latinas. #WageGap

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we spoke to we spoke to Luis Sandoval, Executive Director of Building Skills Partnership (BSP), which provides workforce development, citizenship, civic engagement, and academic opportunities for property service workers. For Luis, “Hispanic Heritage Month is a powerful recognition of the significant contributions our communities have made. It highlights our roles across various sectors—workforce, economy, politics, and more—demonstrating how integral we are to the nation’s fabric. Personally, it’s a chance to inspire my kids by sharing the remarkable achievements of individuals who reflect their own heritage. While we celebrate our progress, it’s also an important moment to acknowledge the challenges that remain and to encourage ongoing dialogue and action toward equity and representation.” In this blog post, Luis shares his perspectives on the significance of this month, how BSP addresses the unique needs of Latino and immigrant workers, and what led him to this work: https://irvine.ly/4dBoMPK
