Just finished an impressive two-day symposium on “Building Climate Resilience in South America,” hosted by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (Policy) Western Hemispheric Affairs. We were excited to see partners from throughout South America, including countries participating in PDC's National Disaster Preparedness Baseline Assessment (NDPBA) program such as Peru, Argentina, Paraguay, and Suriname. We were also excited to have colleagues from Suriname, Colombia, and Peru join a panel on “Adaptive Analysis,” focused on discussing best practices for connecting national and regional data, analysis, and experience for practical resilience solutions. If PNG and the other Pacific Islands become a region for the world to build trust in the development and operation of digital solutions that can then deployed into more complex regions, like Africa, it will be important for France to be involved. Despite ongoing conflicts in the region, international aid teams are mobilizing to assist victims. Research has shown that pre-disaster cooperation, such as implementing building codes and planning, is more effective in saving lives than post-disaster aid. Highlights: 1. 🏆 "We are honored and grateful to announce that Prepared International (PPI) has received the Special Recognition for the Averted Disaster Award for our outstanding work in Disaster Diplomacy and civil protection cooperation. 🏆 This recognition is a testament to #PPI's efforts, its staff, and its friends' work on the disaster risk diplomacy project “Professional Dialogue on emergency preparedness and lifesaving between Jordan, Israel, and Palestine” and in other conflict scenarios. The current heart-breaking suffering of the civilian population in the region underlines the importance of long-term, strategic, and well-informed disaster-diplomatic work. The inception of this transformative project dates back to 2013, when Dr. Albrecht A. Beck, the director of PPI, initiated and mediated it while working for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA). PPI continued to support the project since the beginning and brought it back on track after it was detoured. The Dialogue’s mission is to strengthen cross-border disaster preparedness and response coordination in the Jordan, Israel, and Palestine (JIP) region, ultimately with the aim of saving lives. This intervention has significantly impacted the disaster-prone area and the conflict-affected communities in JIP by utilizing the principles of disaster diplomacy to foster collaboration and address the unique challenges of the region. Throughout PPI’s journey in cooperative disaster preparedness, we learned valuable lessons: ✷ Disaster diplomacy can break the cycle of conflict and disaster. ✷ Misusing cooperation for outside interests is among the largest dangers for a well-planned project. ✷ Trust is the cornerstone of any successful collaboration. ✷ Understanding of disaster diplomacy stays highly limited in International Organizations ✷ A two-way approach, both top-down and bottom-up, is vital for success. ✷ Donors are too often reluctant to support long-term, strategic projects and tend to support light-tower projects without long-term impact. Our efforts have allowed mutual understanding and cooperation, even across political tensions. We've witnessed the power of disaster diplomacy, transcending barriers and fostering civil protection cooperation. At PPI, we’re committed to fostering disaster risk reduction and enhancing resilience in disaster-prone regions characterized by fragile violence contexts. We want to share our award with all the great people who have supported the positive development of the Professional Dialogue and thank them for their unique commitment. New Zealand to host 2024 Pacific defence meeting - https://lnkd.in/gTxHHuPX Minister Judith Collins yesterday announced New Zealand will host next year's South Pacific Defence Ministers' Meeting (SPDMM)."Having just returned from this year's meeting in Noumea, I witnessed first-hand the value of meeting with my Pacific counterparts to discuss regional security and defence matters. I welcome the opportunity to host next year's meeting to continue to progress our joint agenda," Judith Collins says.This year's meeting took place in New Caledonia and covered a range of issues relevant to the region, including maritime security, climate change, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and regional security architecture."As outlined in the joint communique from the meeting, together we continued to identify ways we can work together more effectively to address regional challenges."In addition to attending the official proceedings, Minister Collins held meetings with counterparts from host country France, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Tonga, Chile and Australia. New Zealand will host the ninth annual South Pacific Defence Ministers' meeting (SPDMM) in 2024, with dates and location to be confirmed.SPDMM involves Defence Ministers from Papua New Guinea, Fiji, France, Tonga, Chile, Australia and New Zealand.
