The highlight of my week last week, grabbing a meal with Joanne and Erica right here in Manhattan. Despite speaking every other day, we rarely get together in person! Not sure you'll fine 3 more passionate Recruiters and Design Advocates in this city who are constantly finding ways to give back to our design community whilst juggling what we gotta do for the job! Are you staying HOPEFUL? Hard to have hope about the Design Industry when you're uncertain about it's future. Well Dave Hoffer has seen a few of the seasons of the Design Industry in his 25+ year career thus far and he is HOPEFUL! Dave was our guest on Design:Unfiltered recently and he shared some great perspective on what it is to be a Designer in 2024 and how we can continue to champion an industry and career many have worked so hard for. Here Joanne Weaver, Erica Fortgang and I chat with Dave about all things Hope in Design.

Top Shelf Coffee Shop Interior and a World Class Design Leader...how could it not be a great meeting. This Design Leader has operated at some of the highest levels possible for Design, with some of the worlds leading businesses. It's hard to sum up in a sentence the gravitas in which they operate. Talking about some of the longer term strategies a Design Leader needs to embrace (change doesn't happen over night), how to manage stakeholders who are titans of industry, how designs wins in the boardroom and more. Despite operating at this height, couldn't help but crack a smile when they mentioned they'll jump into figma every other day for certain tasks. What coffee shops am I going to find myself in this week?!

Blue Skies and rooftop terrace lunches! Ripped it across the Brooklyn Bridge from the Manhattan office to catch up with this designer at this iconic spot...IYKYK! He's not in town often so it was great to find time to grab a quick bite and just chat design and what it is to work. Everyone has different work needs, differing work ethics and a different relationship with work. As a recruiter I do my absolute best to remove all my bias and views about work from my interactions with Designers - their work decisions are theirs and theirs alone, not mine. It was great to just chat openly and transparently about own views around work in the current climate, knowing weren't not pushing a bias but just sharing. Good Hangs, Good Chats, Great burger and one of the best spots in Brooklyn!

What a fun lunch at Williamsburg classic, Cafe Mogador! Catching up with this Designer before they kick off their brand new role certainly made my day. The excitement, the commitment to the new opportunity, the difficult but intentional move from the last chapter and into the new. It's a big deal to change jobs, these are significant life events and although I'm working through that literally daily with people, I never forget just how important it is. One part of our conversation over lunch I enjoyed was discussing how this team of founders approached hiring a Designer - I've worked with many Non-Design founders over the years (and still do every week) and all approach differently. This particular founder and team nailed it the hiring process and the experience and as a result they have an absolutely exceptional Designer joining them next week!

Last minute coffee re-schedule, but I'd already ridden to Williamsburg for another meeting, so I found myself with a free hour - a perfect excuse to grab an espresso and catch up what I'd missed in the last hour during my lunch meeting. New spot in East Williamsburg, Three Legged Cat. Coffee was absolutely ripping - of course opted for the Costa Rican beans. Great fit out, great vibe, laptop friendly with outlets along the wall + a beautiful couch area for more of a chill chat. I loved the Community cork board on the wall - that used to be how I'd keep up with so many goings on. This spot is right by my drum studio and it took me back to my early years of answering an add in the paper to join one of my earlier bands...was a different time #oldman

I can get such instant, immediate signals from images when I see a portfolio. Regardless of you UI expertise, you can immediately communicate so much more. When you're battling for attention, use the power of visual and words to quickly get your message across.
