Yesterday, our Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority board of directors approved a new Airport Use Agreement and Premises Lease to govern its business relationship with airlines at Reagan National and Dulles International airports. The 15-year pact, which includes a new $9 billion capital construction program. https://lnkd.in/eXZ3iPMU Significant provisions of the agreement include: * The continued ability to recover all major costs associated with operating the airports. * A $6.99 billion capital construction program for Dulles International Airport, including a new 14-gate concourse and design work for a fifth runway, as well as future projects to accommodate additional flights and passengers as air travel continues to grow. * A $2.39 billion capital construction program for Reagan National Airport, which includes adding new restrooms and other passenger amenities and the eventual replacement of the main concourse in Terminal 1. * Airline-funded debt service coverage to ensure at least a 140-percent target ratio. * Expansions and improvements of the airfield, terminals, concourses, baggage equipment, roadways and other infrastructure will be necessary in future years to accommodate the projected growth in flights at Dulles International and the increase in passengers at both airports.

The recent long lines at TSA checkpoints at Pittsburgh International Airport highlights two reasons for the $1.5 billion new terminal under construction: the growth of the airport over the last several years and the lagging infrastructure.

I recently came across an insightful article by Paul Reinhardt, titled "Transportation Troubleshooting: Modular Construction at Airports: Three Key Considerations for Time-Saving Options." The piece delves into the drivers of modularization in airport expansion projects, highlighting factors like schedule constraints, site laydown area, and working within brownfield environments. This $1.4 billion expansion of Concourse D at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport is long-awaited. In my research on modularization in capital projects, particularly through my work with the Construction Industry Institute (CII), I found alignment with #CII RT-396's modularization business case analysis tool for opportunity framing. It emphasizes evaluating twelve key drivers before adopting modular construction, much like the insights in Paula's article. I’m eager to explore further questions on how local content requirements, HSSE challenges, ESG considerations, and government regulations impact the modularization process. If you're curious about how modularization can streamline complex projects, especially in the transportation sector, I highly recommend giving this article a read. The modular future of construction is closer than we think! 🚀 #modularconstruction #capitalprojects #constructioninnovation #projectmanagement #airportinfrastructure #research #CII Link to the article: [https://lnkd.in/gcgh24r2]

We seek the support of all Rail and Road stakeholders / safety advocates to secure funding for LSM TrainSense® (Int. pat. pend.), a simple cost-effective, life-saving solution. This system requires no roadside infrastructure or maintenance, is easy to implement, and can save millions or billions in taxpayer costs compared to less effective and complicated alternatives. It integrates with existing technology to reduce human error and environmental factors, providing alerts and can trigger braking if warnings are ignored. Funny how I grew up watching Bob the Builder only to realise that the UK is actually pretty bad at building anything. Thameswater's crumbling infrastrcture and finances, the A428's eternally delayed single lane route improvement, the Post Office Scandal, all the chaos around HS2, it really isn't surprising that plans to relax liquid restrictions by installing new scanners (which most developed countries have already been using for years now) is getting pushed back. The infrastructure and public service here is showing cracks, and it seems like the real problem is not even in the building part, but getting through the proposal and consent stages to start building. Before fixing roads and sewers, the UK may need to fix their planning system first. #infrastructure #urbanplanning #airports #publictransport

The Federal Aviation Administration handed out more than $566 million to facilities in 47 states Tuesday as part of a grant program to modernize airports that was included under the 2021 infrastructure law. Nearly 300 grants were awarded to airports across the country to revamp runways, terminals, security checkpoints, parking garages and other airport infrastructure, according to the Biden administration. Americans have been willing to travel at record levels following the pandemic. Last year, the U.S. aviation industry celebrated its busiest year ever for air travel with 16.3 million flights. To meet the growing demand, airports across the country have been prioritizing upgrades to aging infrastructure and planning necessary expansions. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e4uu2SYi
