This year, before I browsed Mother's Day cards at CVS, I paused at the gift cards. I was highly disappointed. I was reminded why we don't buy local gift cards. When you walk into a store and this colorful rack catches your eye, you're going to grab a safe, generic gift card on your way to checkout—it makes sense! $100 billion is spent on (non-local) gift cards each year. That's because of convenience. What if even a fraction of this went to outstanding small businesses in local communities instead of just multi-national corporations?
