Ramadan Mubarak! Inclusive work environments include supporting your employees during times of religious observance. Ramadan began a few days ago, and it's a good time to think about how leadership can support their religious employees during times of observation and celebration. While the majority of Swedes are atheist/loosely Lutheran, there are still many people in Sweden who are guided by religion, and there are ways to support religious observation without impacting productivity or limiting non-observing employees. Here are some easy tweaks you can make to the workplace during Ramadan for observing employees: 🕌 Understand that not all practicing Muslims observe Ramadan the same way. From health reasons to personal ones, everyone may have different levels of observation; ⏳ Allow flexible working hours so your employees can fulfil their spiritual obligations, and have adequate time to book before breaking their fast. Most employees will notify or request PTO well in advance to allow for planning, and adjust their working hours accordingly; 🌌 If employees work on site, set aside a quiet, private room (it can be an empty office) for prayer; 🍰 Still invite your Muslim colleagues to fika. Even if they're not eating or drinking, they can still be part of social events (although they may choose to not join). It's also not wrong of you to eat in front of them. (Pro tip: if you're bringing in cakes or pastries for fika, box some for observing Muslims to take home for an after sunset dessert!). As workplaces become more diverse, it's important for companies to have frank and open discussions about different observations and how they can and cannot be accommodated. Remember, you're not required to change your whole company structure to support different observances! But you'll find it often just takes small adjustments to improve employee wellbeing, increase inclusivity, and maintain productivity even during times of religious observation. "Cultural Awareness Workshop" Conducted this workshop for my team located in three regions - Chennai, Denmark, Porto (we also have teammates from Brazil, Poland, Iran, Dominic Republic as their nationality) and got a strong understanding of cross-cultural behaviors. With the new team setup and revised roles & responsibilities/ KPIs and with revised strategy/ focus areas it is really important to foster a better collaboration than we currently do.   This workshop helped the team to discover their own work-style preferences and also can relate that to other colleagues and cultures.   The learnings we had will help to reduce the potential for misunderstandings and conflicts among us. It will help us adapt a bit and also to understand why people behave the way they do. It also made us aware of our own filters through which you perceive others. Thank you Sanjana Sarma for the excellent inputs and insights on the cultural awareness. We enjoyed the workshop and for sure it will enhance the way we work with each other with better collaboration. One of the deal breakers in the trips I used to diligently organise is if a place had a thriving or distinct CULTURE. 🇰🇭 Back in 2008, I organised a family trip to Cambodia before my cousins wedding in KL. All three of us flew in from different continents. Amma close by from KL, my older sis from Melbourne and me from London. All three of us with very different personalities enjoyed this short 4 day 3 night trip in Siem Reap as it had a unique culture with a cross section of influence from the Buddhist and Hindu cultures. Yes the temples were beautiful. 🫱🏾🫲🏻 👑 However the people we met had specific norms, beliefs that centered the well-being of an elder. Amma was treated literally like a ‘Queen’ by our private local guide. Plus as she had knowledge about the Hindu culture and openly shared her understanding he appreciated it and opened up even more and took us to his local village too ! Let’s turn our attention now to a company. 🔑 Don’t you think if it has a thriving or transformational culture.. more talent will be attracted to work there ? 🔑 More talent would work there for a longer period instead of waiting to leave ? 🔑 More people will tell and encourage others to apply for a role there too ? Ramadan Mubarak to all my Muslim friends and colleagues observing. ☪️ For those asking “how can I foster a more inclusive workplace during Ramadan?” following are some tips: 🌙 Educate yourself: Take the time to learn about Ramadan, its significance, and the practices observed by Muslims during this holy month. Understanding the basics will help you be more sensitive and respectful. 🌙 Be mindful: Remember our Muslim coworkers and clients might be fasting from dawn to sunset. Avoid scheduling important meetings or events during times when they may be feeling fatigued. 🌙 Respect dietary restrictions: If you're planning team lunches or events with clients try to include food options suitable for those observing Ramadan. 🌙 Offer flexibility: Recognize fasting can be challenging, both physically and mentally. Offer support if coworkers need to take breaks or adjust their work schedule during Ramadan. 🌙 Celebrate together: Take the opportunity to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan, with Muslim colleagues.
