Our JBA colleagues, Angus Pettit and David Basset, are attending the Annual Sniffer Conference this week, joining delegates and guest speakers from across the #Flood and #Resilience community. Taking place at Edinburgh's Dynamic Earth over two days, this year's theme, "Taking Actions to Implement the Flood Resilience Strategy," focuses on building upon Scotland's first National Flood Resilience Strategy, published by the Scottish Government in December 2024. To achieve the strategy’s vision, a higher level of cross-sector collaboration is essential, and the conference is a key driver in encouraging this approach. Check out the full conference programme here. https://lnkd.in/e2QZST5V

Flooding is one of the most serious impacts of climate change. It has devastating and long-lasting effects on communities and major impacts on our economy. Yet, there is currently a major gap in funding for flood defence schemes in England. Earlier this year, it was revealed that 500 of the 2,000 flood defence schemes designed to protect communities at critical risk of flooding will no longer receive the necessary investment. This briefing sets out the background to the major downgrading of flood defence works in England. It then uses Lowestoft as case study to explore the dramatic implications for those communities where strategic flood defence investment has been withdrawn. https://lnkd.in/euX_J96K #Flood #FloodDefence #FloodRisk #ExtremeWeather #Planning

ℹ️Brazil’s flood relief efforts and the war on disinformation ghouls At this point, it is no surprise that communication is one of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration’s weakest points. There is a problem with rerouting a somewhat mature political party’s way of doing politics that is still not fully adapted to social media’s real-time reactions. There are also flaws regarding the best way to convey a message in more “old-school” formats. However, the contestants in the communication battle should at least implicitly agree to dispute the narrative advantage in good faith. Not even the worst floods in almost a century in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s southernmost state, which victimized almost 150 people (and counting) while forcing over 600,000 more out of their homes, have been immune to the fake news industry structured by the far right on social media, with dire results for those in need. 🔗Read more in our full article by Mário Sérgio Lima here 👇 https://lnkd.in/ddh3JigN #ClimateChange #FakeNews #RioGrandeDoSul #Brazil

"If we don't focus on policy and changing the system we're not setting up our most vulnerable communities for success." Our Founder Melissa Roberts joins waterloop podcast to discuss the nationwide impacts of flooding, the need for innovative, community-driven solutions, and how watershed-based planning and proactive, data-driven investments can build long-term flood resilience. https://lnkd.in/ev7RT-Sr
Flooding is impacting communities nationwide with both devastating and costly effects. The solution requires resilience planning, infrastructure adaptation, and community involvement to effectively address flood risk. In this episode, Melissa Roberts of the American Flood Coalition discusses the increasing frequency and impact of flooding across the U.S. and the need for innovative, community-focused solutions. She highlights recent projects, like transforming public spaces to double as floodwater basins in North Carolina and engaging farmers in Iowa to reduce downstream flooding. Melissa also discusses the role of nature-based infrastructure, watershed-based planning, and data-driven policies in building long-term flood resilience. This episode is from a conversation at the Reservoir Center for Water Solutions where waterloop is the media partner.

Canada's Western Flood Mapping Conference and Workshop brings together invested parties from all related sectors and aims to address key challenges concerning flood hazard mapping methodologies specific to Western provinces and territories including Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. I am happy to have been invited to present under the Ice Jams & Debris Flooding/Flows stream on Alberta's Approach to Hydrogeomorphic Hazards. I am looking forward not only presenting on this rapidly evolving work but to connect and learning from colleagues across Western Canada. Additionally from our team, Peter Onysko will be presenting on Alberta's Flood Hazard Identification Program and Zahidul Islam will be moderating sessions.

Day 2 of our Property Flood Resilience (#PFR) Focus Week is here! Today, we're discussing resilience vs. resistance and exploring various PFR products available. Follow us across all our social media channels as we share valuable resources and insights during our #PFR Focus Week! #Resilience measures aim to reduce the impact and damage caused by floodwater once it enters a property, resulting in quick and easy cleaning, drying, recovery and reoccupation of the property.💧🏡 ➡️ https://ow.ly/tE7Z50RytHw Resistance Measures are designed to 'resist' water entry, keep water out and prevent internal damage caused by floodwater. The aim is to close all water entry points and protect a property so that the structural integrity is not compromised💧🏡. ➡️ https://ow.ly/sERx50RytHv
