Parents of disabled children often face barriers in accessing their children's rights. Researching support services can be confusing and time consuming. Many parents don't know where to begin. Among UK parents whose children have disabilities, 69% receive no support. For working mothers, the lack of support often means they must give up their careers to be full-time carers. This widens the economic gender gap. Sam Tebb set up Parent Suportal to make accessing support easier for families, saving parents valuable time. Requiring organizations to endure numerous rounds of consideration that include written submissions, in-person meetings, follow-up requests, and videotaped interviews without compensating for time, knowledge, and labor are prime examples of #CrappyFundingPractices. San Diego Gives kicked off last week and the Kim Center and I are thrilled to be a part of this transformative campaign. As a proud board member of the Kim Center, I would like you to take time and consider supporting the Kim Center's work to remove barriers within the workplace and empower employers to create a culture where all workers have fair access to opportunities to thrive and succeed. To do this, we conducted groundbreaking research specific to San Diego. We now know that the top three barriers for San Diego workers to succeed are lack of childcare (30% are thinking of leaving their job because they lack employer support), sexual harassment (32% experience this at work), and the limited economic power of small businesses (39% of all San Diego businesses are women-owned but they can only contribute 10% of the region’s hiring capacity and annual revenue. In addition, we formed the powerful LEAPS San Diego Alliance to tackle these issues head on by creating a targeted LEAPS Playbook of roadmaps, toolkits, and best practices for employers of diverse sizes and industries. We recognize that there is still much work to be done, and we need your support to continue making a meaningful impact.
