Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship – a need and opportunity for both Cumbria and the UK?
For the UK, where #advancedmanufacturing is such a large sector of the economy and focus for GVA productivity growth, it is unbelievable that there is no accredited ‘Advanced Manufacturing #Apprenticeship’ for Level 2/3/4 in the whole of the UK (Or ones that I can find anyway?).
If people are looking for a career in manufacturing with an engineering or mechanical design bias then both locally and nationally there is good provision and coverage. Especially in regional clusters of the North East for #automotive, Midlands for #aerospace, and the North West/Cumbria for #nuclear , where there is a regional large employer able to provide numbers to fill college cohort requirements of 20+.
However, not all college leavers and existing employees need, want or are able to go down that route; not everyone needs to be at degree level to succeed in a career in manufacturing. Aptitude, attitude and ability to work within teams are just as, and arguably more, important than academic qualifications alone.
Looking recently as a passionate manufacturer and also as a board member of the #CumbriaLEP, we are working collaboratively with the support of Cumbria LEP, the #UniversityofCumbria of Cumbria, all the local FE Colleges and apprenticeship providers, the Chamber of Commerce, and other local manufacturing companies of a medium and SME level to develop a regional provision of Level 2 through to 6 for an ‘Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship’ career pathway.
We have inadvertently found a real gap, and hence a large opportunity to provide apprenticeships supporting the skills and productivity gap from process operator level, through to team leader and departmental manager level. The closest apprenticeships standards we have found nationally are the Lean Manufacturing Operator (L2 – ST0450) through to Improvement Technician (ST0193) > Practitioner (ST0192) > Leader (ST0556) - see the visual attached.
If you are a national employer and have already found a solution and pathway that works from a manufacturing operator level through to management, including a strong element of Continuous Improvement and operational Excellence, then please share your learnings.
If you are a local Cumbrian manufacturing business of any size family SME to large multi-national scale employer we are looking for engagement and collaboration to get this pathway actually delivered with the providers – for that we need commitment and numbers. Please get in touch with myself or Colin Luhrs at Cumbria LEP, or Kevin Warman at Cumbria Chamber of Commerce.
