How is the industry improving building standards for the future? This month marks the 7th anniversary of the Grenfell Tower tragedy, which caused dozens of lives to be needlessly lost. Since then, the industry has taken much-needed steps forward to improve building safety throughout design, construction and occupation, but have the changes progressed far enough? In our latest edition of Millmount, Associate Director Tristan Cooper MCIAT Cooper, spoke with John Nielsen, one of our construction partners at CK21 Ltd, about the impact, challenges and opportunities the new regulations bring. GRENFELL TOWER FIRE- 7th ANNIVERSARY TODAY, 14th JUNE 2024 An outsider might be excused for thinking that the Construction Industry had responded appropriately to this tragedy, judging from the ‘noise’ surrounding the Building Safety Act (almost entirely around HRBs). Closer study would reveal a very different picture: Seven years after this event, a wake-up call like no other, is it the considered view that the Industry: Has got to grips with new legislation Has realised it applies to all buildings, of all sizes Has realised the risk management need to apply the concepts of the golden thread, the safety case, and gateways, to buildings other than HRBs, in a proportionate manner Has realised that these concepts also apply to non-building structures, in a risk- management sense Has realised that most failures- involving life and limb, or not- result from the same simple failings (Soft Hazards). Hence the need to concentrate on these. Has realised that we frequently continue to organise ourselves without adequate thought to minimising safety risk, and hence need to change our method of project contractual frameworks. Has seen all industry bodies provide the necessary persistent leadership and direction, at senior level. Has provided adequate assistance and direction to members of industry bodies to the necessary level of detail, vision, and emphasis, …commensurate with the extra-ordinary need, resulting from an extra-ordinary event? How do you feel about the industry position? What have you done about it? As an aside, and not related to the industry this time, the Government is about to stand-down, and yet no decision has yet been made regarding the timing or extent of demolition of the building. Matt Hodges-Long's post this morning hit the spot. #cdm #ice #ise #istructe #drm #riskmanagement #grenfell #twf #design #structuraldesign

Exciting to see - IndiNature hemp insulation will be going in alongside this CLT buildup - maxing the carbon storage using hemp now grown only 80 miles away on a Kelso farm in Scotland as well as farms in Yorkshire ! #lowcarbonbuilding #healthybuilding #hempinsulation
Exciting progress to start the year off at the National Retrofit Centre! Our drone captured the Clark Contracts team expertly removing the main glass facade, preparing the way for the cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels. Meanwhile, in the factory, Ecosystems Technologies is hard at work on Stage 2 of the panel fabrication. Stay tuned for more progress updates.
