Had the privilege of attending the Annual Joint Dinner hosted by COMMERCIAL-INDUSTRIAL REALTY COUNCIL OF NEW CASTLE COUNTY, SIOR Philadelphia Chapter, PA/NJ/DE CCIM Chapter, Tri-County Suburban REALTORS Commercial Chapter, Delaware Chapter of the Appraisal Institute, and Delaware Real Estate Women. One highlight from the night (besides the networking) was Jerry Sweeney of Brandywine Realty Trust providing a keynote on the current office market fundamentals and future outlook. The depth of insights shared is invaluable for steering our course in the dynamic real estate landscape. One of my favorite things about his talk was less about the real estate industry, but more about mentality. Not an exact quote, but it was along the lines of "If you walk around thinking that things will go wrong, things will go wrong. Attitude affects outcome.” This was a powerful reminder that our mindset shapes our reality in the complex world of real estate. It emphasized the profound impact a positive attitude can have on steering through challenges and influencing successful outcomes. Main Street Specialist Leigh Young, AICP recently spent time with the board of directors from the Historic Lapeer - Main Street DDA during their annual board retreat, working on examining their Transformation Strategy and related strategic planning for the organization. #MichiganMainStreet communities deploy transformation strategies to articulate a focused, deliberate path to revitalizing or strengthening a downtown or commercial district’s economy. Grounded by both an understanding of the underlying drivers of the local and regional economy, as well as community feedback and engagement, a Transformation Strategy should describe a market position that the commercial district can successfully fulfill. An effective Transformation Strategy serves a particular customer segment, responds to an underserved market demand, or creates an authentic destination. Simply stated, a Transformation Strategy is a comprehensive economic development strategy that guides the direction of the revitalization journey and, over time, transforms the district. As part of #EconDevWeek 2024, DDD is highlighting the strategies and thought behind our approach to economic development in Downtown New Orleans. We began earlier this week (see above posts) by sharing information on the designated ED focus areas #1 & #2; today will be highlighting #3 & #4. 3) Infrastructure: DDD prioritizes advocacy for the maintenance of reliable and predictable public asset management, as well as the development of impactful infrastructure projects. This is part of our understanding that the maintenance and improvement of our Downtown will better allow our local economic sector to thrive. 4) Workforce Development: A central pillar of economic development, workforce development is a key area of focus for DDD. We aim to facilitate education and training to meet Downtown’s current and future workforce needs. Puget Sound Business Journal's parent American City Business Journals analyzed 44 U.S. markets generating a "Downtown Vitality Index" to determine a post-pandemic performance of their central business districts. City of Seattle scored 36.2 (5th from the bottom). City and County of Denver scored 35.3 and City of Chicago scored 36.4. City of Miami scored 71.85 which is #1 on the index. A record 9,108 companies were nominated or asked to participate. Of those nominated, 314 companies participated in the no-cost scientific survey program.
