This is a unique course with a unique feature where designing a greener and energy efficient built environment, is based on scientific evidence, produced by powerful engineering software tools, taught in the course. Nottingham University’s Department of Architecture & Built Environment is home of the MSc Renewable Energy and Architecture, since 1997.  The department’s first MSc course, has been teaching students how to integrate, energy from renewable sources (such as sun & wind), to design, simulate, & optimize, smart, energy efficient, bio-climatic, & sustainable, urban, landscape, & building design & construction solutions, in different climates. Students base their designs on scientific evidence, which they produce, using advanced engineering software tools, taught in the course. These include Industry standard software & tools developed specifically for this course. From Construction Sites to PhD Research: A Journey of Continuos Learning Transitioning from practicing construction management on-site to pursuing a PhD in Construction is an ongoing transformative experience. It's been a path of immense learning, growth, and understanding—one that hasn’t always been easy, but has definitely been rewarding. (#little discoveries, eureka moments) Working on construction sites taught me practical skills, problem-solving, and decision-making in fast-paced environments. But as my PhD journey progresses, I’ve had several chances to step back and understand why we do what we do. I’ve gained deeper insights into the theories, processes, and technologies that drive construction management, safety, and productivity. Concepts like Building Information Modeling (BIM), Automation, and AI in construction are no longer abstract ideas—they are tools I can now see transforming the future of our industry. The research process is teaching me patience, resilience, and the importance of curiosity. It’s an exciting journey of discovery, where every challenge brings a new perspective. More importantly, it’s an opportunity to contribute to the field, making construction safer, more efficient, and sustainable. For anyone considering a similar leap from practice to academia, know that while it requires dedication, the rewards are immense. You’ll not only enhance your professional expertise but also contribute to the bigger picture of advancing the construction industry.

The bridge's main structure rests on a central support system, typically a vertical pin and ring positioned near its center of gravity. Most swing bridges rotate a full 90 degrees (one-quarter turn) to open for waterway traffic. While for bridges crossing channels at an angle, the design can be adjusted to rotate 45 degrees (one-eighth turn) for optimal clearance.
