NEW YORK STATE LAUNCHES FASHION GRANTS FOR SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATION Yola Mzizi for The Business of Fashion Key Takeaways: ♻ New York governor Kathy Hochul announced Thursday a new grant programme aimed at fostering sustainability and innovation in the state’s fashion industry.New York state’s Fashion Innovation Center will dole out up to $10,000 in funding to support start-ups, farmers and researchers in their efforts to develop new materials, manufacturing technologies and agricultural processes. Awardees will also receive mentorship from experts in their industries as well as access to resources and equipment to accelerate their projects. 🗣 ”Nothing is more synonymous with New York than fashion, and this industry generates more than $25 billion a year in wages for hardworking New Yorkers,” Hochul said in a statement. “With these grants though the Fashion Innovation Center, we are working together to advance innovative solutions and build a more sustainable industry.” 📢 The initiative is part of a larger strategy by the state to revitalise the fashion industry by encouraging the growth of a New York-based supply chain in order to build a “sustainable and green economy,” said Hope Knight, president, chief executive and commissioner of New York state’s economic development agency. Last week, Belgian fashion brand Xandres launched PRELOVED corners i exclusively in their stores in Ghent and Bruges. The programme offers high-quality secondhand and vintage Xandres - you can both buy and sell. The project is a pilot as part of the Living Lab INFINITEX - a research project funded by VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship and led by Thomas More University of Applied Sciences. What and how is Xandres testing? 🍬 circular business models in fashion include rental, repair en reselling models with the aim of prolonging the life of our garments 🍬 as high quality and timeless fashion is in the core of Xandres' DNA and the brand is already investing heavily in repair with their free lifelong repair programme, a test with reselling felt as the next step 🍬 'It FELT like the next step?' Yes, but as it's not the best idea to just randomly test whatever feels right, Xandres asked Thomas More to first do an in-depth analysis of their customers and their view on rental and resale; online as well as offline 🍬 testing with resale models offline seemed to be the most logical step, even though a vast majority of the current client base is not asking for it 🍬 analysing how this business model works with the current customers is just one aspect of course - the brand also wants to measure how a different customer base perhaps can be reached Very exciting how these pilots will turn out and happy to be following-up this project with Xandres Sustainability coordinator Clio Gydé. Some 'gut feeling' thoughts 🍭 branding of this project is crucial - in marketing as well as in visual merchandising, big shoutout to the amazing work done by Cheryl, Didier Van Den Bosch, Leen Cools and their team in creating the right atmosphere 🍭 retail experience is defining more than ever - the shop managers and personnel have a new 'role': they need to screen garments and go in conversation with customers on a whole new level. To show support for both the fashion industry and the environment, Governor Kathy Hochul included a US $5 million investment for hemp and biobased product in the budget for the New York fashion industry, during New York Fashion Week. Governor Hochul made this investment in order to celebrate New York’s fashion industry and its role in driving the State economy, but also with the aim of helping to increase the production of fibre, which will then be used in apparel and design. Investing into the production of fibre truly highlights Hochul’s support, as this kind of material is an excellent sustainable and alternative material for the fashion industry to use, whilst also benefitting the environment.
