If the world is going to shift away from the most damaging impacts of the climate crisis, it needs to decarbonize the industry sector. Industry is made up of the processes we use to extract and refine raw materials, and turn them into the roads, buildings, appliances, equipment, vehicles and products all around us. These industrial activities — including mining, manufacturing, construction and waste processing — accounted for one-fifth of direct global emissions in 2019. When you include indirect emissions from power and heat, that percentage goes up to almost 30% of global emissions. In addition, the industry sector also encompasses the production of oil and gas (which separately accounts for over 4% of global emissions). Pennsylvania’s ambition to launch a first-in-the-country industrial decarbonization program scored a $396 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one of the largest among the 25 awards announced on Monday and is part of $4.3 billion in funding for projects in 30 states. Industrial decarbonization leads to several benefits beyond slowing climate change, including dramatically improving air quality and reducing millions of early deaths globally. I appreciate the concept of the Social Cost of Carbon because it provides a practical tool to quantitatively assess climate-related initiatives without being influenced by ideology. Currently, the EPA has set it at $190 per ton. This means that you can assess the environmental impact of fossil fuel subsidies and the burden imposed on future generations. In our specific context, we are accumulating a debt of $9.5 trillion dollars annually, a figure so significant that it's challenging to fully comprehend. https://lnkd.in/eHx4_ifq

NPR discusses how the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) — hailed as the most ambitious climate legislation in U.S. history — is working to move the country away from fossil fuels while rebuilding the manufacturing industry. “So far, 316 new clean energy projects have been announced since the law passed, generating more than 100,000 new manufacturing jobs, according to the environmental business group E2. The White House estimates more than 270,000 jobs have been created,” NPR cites. JCF has been selected to receive approximately $1 billion in funding from the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund’s Clean Communities Investment Accelerator program, part of the IRA. The bipartisan PROVE IT Act passed the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee last month. It “has drawn the support of a broad coalition of business, industry, and advocacy groups who believe that the bill will substantiate the U.S. carbon advantage and that it will defend and promote U.S. commercial interests, lower global emissions, and ensure U.S. products are treated fairly in global markets,” writes the Council’s Daniel Hoenig. The priorities for European Commission are now clear, with the Political Guidelines being published. Ursula von der Leyen emphasised the need to boost European competitiveness, whilst at the same time committing to the goals of European #GreenDeal. In her speech, she emphasised European competitiveness and climate action, and underscored the importance of the European Green Deal for industry competitiveness. Some key measure are: #CleanIndustrialDeal: to be proposed within the first 100 days of the mandate to decarbonise and bring down energy prices. #GreenDeal implementation: with a focus on implementing legislation in the simplest, fairest and most cost-efficient way. #CircularEconomy Act: to create market demand for secondary materials and establish a single market for waste. #IndustrialDecarbonizationAcceleratorAct: to support industries and companies through the transition.
