Here we go again! 🎒 Happy first day of school for all those returning and to parents making the drop-off and pick-up runs. Let's keep safe this September. Take a look at these reminders from #GetPreparedBC: 🍎 Observe School Zone Speeds Although you should always obey posted speed limits, it is especially important during the school year. Children crossing the road on their way to and from school can easily get distracted and step into harm's way. 🍎 Obey the Crossing Guard A crossing guard is there to keep children safe. If you come up to a set of lights, and the light turns green, but the crossing guard still says stop, follow his/her direction and not the traffic light. 🍎 Watch for Darting Children Kids are small and easily distracted, and for drivers, this can create dangerous situations on the roads. Be vigilant and alert behind the wheel. 🍎 School Buses Make sure children don't arrive at the bus stop too early, ensure they wait away from the road, and practice extra caution when driving by a school bus.

As back-to-school season begins, it’s important to keep students safe near the road. Always stop for school buses. Not only is passing a school bus dangerous for students, it is against the law! Students may stand several feet away from a bus at a stop, or cross the street when boarding or getting off the bus. Remember to be mindful of surrounding areas as children could run to catch the bus. 🟡 Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop – slow down and prepare to stop your vehicle. 🔴 Red flashing lights and extended stop arms indicate children are getting on or off – stop your car until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving.

Now that school is back in session, you can expect some changes on the road. This means college and high school student drivers add to traffic; even parents rush to drop kids off before work. During this frantic time, drivers must take precautions for increased traffic and dangers as children return to school to avoid unfortunate accidents. Here are some tips from AARP to help make school zones safer for everyone. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eeKaQX3N

IMPORTANT REMINDER: NO EARLY RELEASE TODAY! Like many other schools nearby, the St. Helens School District had to close for four days in January due to inclement weather. Unfortunately, this resulted in a loss of valuable instructional time within our district. To ensure that our students receive the necessary educational opportunities, we have made adjustments to our 2023/2024 school calendar. Rather than extending the school year, we have opted to cancel the last two early release days. This decision allows us to utilize that time effectively to make up for the missed instruction. Below are the revised dates: Wednesday, May 29, 2024 – NO EARLY RELEASE Wednesday, June 5, 2024 – NO EARLY RELEASE

Stevie Wonder once said “Just because a man lacks the use of his eyes, it doesn’t mean he lacks vision. We all have ability, the difference is how we use it”. I love that! There is no direct correlation between intelligence and visual impairment and so educators must consider how a learner’s level of useful vision and/or reliance on their other senses can be maximised. Nobody can downplay the importance of academia, but a rigorous academic education is no longer enough to prepare children for entry into the real world. We want our children to develop important life skills - resilience, confidence, perseverance and, importantly, the ability to work well with other people, despite the differences they have, which is why we support United Kingdom Acquired Brain Injury Forum's work in the education space. We know through the work we do and our own community that inclusive education breaks down barriers and prejudice as everyone becomes more accepting of difference and benefits from a friendlier, open environment. Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Blind Students Can Benefit Everyone. Here's How (edweek.org)
