https://lnkd.in/gyateEP4 Last week, Canada added high-purity iron ore to its Critical Minerals List. Australia has now recognised the profound "green iron" production and export opportunity, but is in competition with the Middle East, Canada, Brazil and others for the necessary investment that is being deployed globally now as our trading partners lock in their future decarbonised supply chains. Last year, Magnetite Mines made a comprehensive submission to government for the inclusion of magnetite (able to be concentrated into very high purity iron ore and necessary to make green iron) on to Australia's Critical Minerals List. Unfortunately, magnetite neither made the Critical Minerals List nor the new Strategic Materials List. This leaves it out of focus for government support, despite the infrastructure requirements and collaboration required to realise the economy-changing opportunity of green iron production and export. We encourage this to change as a result of the current Green Metals Industry Consultation process being coordinated by the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. The #copper bellwether is tolling. Prices rose as much as 31.7% from the beginning of this year, hitting an all-time high of $11,000 per tonne in May. The rise of #ArtificialIntelligence (AI) and resulting massive upswing in global #DataInfrastructure investment has accelerated #CopperDemand, which had already picked up the pace with the advent of the #EnergyTransition and the kilometres of electrification infrastructure required to meet net-zero goals. Solis Minerals Ltd (ASX:SLM, TSX-V:SLMN, OTCQB:SLMFF) holds one of the largest and most prospective holdings in the coastal belt region of Peru, a copper producing powerhouse second only to Chile. With the closure of Canadian miner First Quantum’s Cobre Panama mine eliminating a full 1.5% of global #CopperProduction, SLM is positioning its projects to meet the 427 million tonnes of copper projected to be needed by 2050. Benchmark Mineral Intelligence (BMI) forecasts global copper consumption to grow 3.5% to 28 million tonnes in 2024, and for demand to increase from 27 million tonnes in 2023 to 38 million tonnes in 2032, averaging 3.9% yearly growth. Yet the US Geological Survey reports supply from copper mines in 2023 amounted to only 22 million tonnes. If the copper supply doesn’t grow this year, we are looking at a 6Mt deficit. Our calculations showed the current 22 million tonnes of production reflects roughly a 20% reduction in output from the top 20 copper mines. If supply interruptions continue in some of the top producers, like Chile, Peru, Zambia and the DRC, the deficit could grow even bigger, and likely will. It should now be obvious why everyone is scrambling to get their hands on copper. Once the workhorse of the global economy, cheap and plentiful, copper has been elevated to the world’s critical mineral, with rising prices indicative of over-demand and under-supply." S&P Global's latest analysis on mine development times reveals some concerning trends for the US mineral industry. With an average of 29 years from discovery to production, the US has the second longest mine development times globally, surpassed only by Zambia. Only three mines have come on line since 2002. We can’t go green or achieve net zero without mineral extraction. Something needs to change or we will never meet our environmental goals.

⚡🚗 Australian Government Resources Minister Madeleine King is firm European electric vehicle (EV) markets can rely on Australian critical minerals. King told The Australian Financial Review (AFR) that she wants to see her European counterparts put their money where their mouth is and push for the continent’s electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to source their critical minerals from Australia as opposed to ethically dubious sources. “We’re a reliable supplier of commodities that are not subject to undue interference or restraint from anyone, but particularly the government,” she said. “If the energy transformation is about saving the planet, of being cleaner and greener and sustainable and having high standards, there has to be recognition of those (higher) standards in Australia. Otherwise, what’s the point?” King said. STRATEGIC METALS: AUSTRALIAN RESOURCE MINISTER TO VISIT US AND CANADA THIS WEEK - Madeleine King aims to promote a green surcharge for Australia’s resources in hopes of making it more competitive. Australia’s Resource Minister Madeleine King will visit the U.S. and Canada this week to attend conferences and hold talks on critical minerals, supply chains, and decarbonization, according to a press release. King will first attend two conferences on opportunities and challenges for the mining industry in Canada’s largest city, Toronto. Following the conferences, King will meet with her Canadian and, later this week, U.S. counterparts to promote Australia’s mining sector and emphasize the high ESG and safety standards in the industry Down Under in an effort to get them on board a green surcharge for critical minerals. “The prices paid for our minerals need to recognise that Australian workers enjoy the best conditions and the highest safety standards,” King said. The minister has recently expressed that she sees a growing discrepancy in some Western nations between the demands for sustainability and the price people are prepared to pay for the needed critical minerals. CANADA: CENTERSTAGE FOR CRITICAL MINERALS THIS WEEK - Besides King’s visit, Canada also hosted a Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) meeting in Toronto on Sunday, the Korea Times reports. Led by Jose Fernandez, U.S. Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment, the members agreed to boost the policy support for 23 case projects on extracting, refining, and recycling critical minerals. Under the MSP, 13 countries and the European Union joined forces in 2022 to address critical minerals supply chains and connected challenges.
