UK Government. Special Advisers. A book. This is a nice book and a good read. Dan writes well, communicating in straightforward language in spite of, or maybe because of, his intellectual ability. I’ve enjoyed reading it and I recommend it unreservedly to anyone who is even slightly interested in how UK government decisions are made and the respective roles of ministers, advisers and civil servants. It is neither dry nor dull. Sometimes it’s sad. Sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it shines the spotlight, more brightly than others have done, on a way of thinking, a way of behaving, that is unique to the Westminster environment. It does all of that without naming a single name or pointing a finger. What does a special adviser do? Well, Dan sets out the answer almost at the end of the book, in the last paragraph on page 125. Earlier in the book, I felt that he underplayed the role of special advisers in driving policy. Only Darren, among his characters, really steps up to that. But finally, there it is: “You weren’t only there to do what the politicians thought of, but to help them think, to help them overcome obstacles, to help them deliver what was right.” Bringing workable new ideas to the table, joining up the dots in the policy play-list, spotting and avoiding the elephant traps, developing the narrative that lights up the minister’s imagination, empowering her or him to sell the policy concepts, getting internal and external stakeholders onside, creating the comms to support new policy, and engineering delivery. That’s the role of the special adviser. That’s what makes it such a rich experience. Those of us who’ve been privileged to be a special adviser take that experience with us for the rest of our lives. We are never the same again. Dan captures how we feel about the triumphs and disappointments. The fear at the start. The sadness at the end of the journey. The battles in between. Read and enjoy!
