Stunned and speechless. Sydnie Ritze was completely caught off guard this afternoon when Dr. Butterfield announced her as the 2023-24 Jenks Public Schools District Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Ritze, AVID and English teacher at Jenks High School, is a champion and cheerleader for her students. She is a fierce advocate for public education and believes that what students need most is someone who believes in them. She never wanted to be anything but a teacher and now, in her 11th year at Jenks High School, she is the recipient of the highest honor the District can bestow on a teacher. “To receive this award is one of the most humbling and overwhelming moments of my life. I work with such amazing individuals who are so good at what they do. I am overjoyed, and to be selected to represent Jenks Public Schools in this way is truly humbling.” Please join us in congratulating Sydnie Ritze on earning this prestigious award!

You make two solid points here, Michael, including (1) a Master’s degree itself is weakly correlated to #TeacherExcellence and (2) paying teachers more overall would widen and deepen the pool of talented candidates. If I were starting my physics teaching career today, rather than 30 years ago, I would be able to command a near 6-figure salary in select parts of the country and that figure will only increase in the near term. One key point to add here regards the leaders with whom teachers work. Teachers are attracted to schools with world-class leadership…instructionally, organizationally, developmentally, etc. Teachers leave education due to factors that #SchoolLeadership directly controls. If we increase #PrincipalExcellence we will do more to improve the teacher pipeline than exorbitant raises ever could. s4e.com

To introduce our Founding High School Faculty, I'll be sharing some clips of interviews I've conducted with each of them about their educational vision and philosophy. You'll see why we're so excited to have them on board with us at Tessellations School. I'm inspired by the brilliant minds, caring hearts, and capable hands that each of these teachers will bring as they craft learning experiences for our students at Tessie High. First up: our Founding English Teacher, Tess Tran. In the first of several clips that I'll be posting from her in the days to come, you'll hear her speak about the value of an education in English: "It is the ability to critically examine mythologies and narratives that continue to shape society. If we're not able to recognize the power of narratives on society, and on us as individuals, we become passive consumers; we absorb narratives about ourselves, about other people, and about the way the world should work. My goal is to help students critically examine the narratives that surround them and decide: 'Do I believe in this or not? Do I want to accept this? Do I want to reject it? Do I want to change it?'"
