To introduce our Founding High School Faculty, I'll be sharing some clips of interviews I've conducted with each of them about their educational vision and philosophy. You'll see why we're so excited to have them on board with us at Tessellations School. I'm inspired by the brilliant minds, caring hearts, and capable hands that each of these teachers will bring as they craft learning experiences for our students at Tessie High. First up: our Founding English Teacher, Tess Tran. In the first of several clips that I'll be posting from her in the days to come, you'll hear her speak about the value of an education in English: "It is the ability to critically examine mythologies and narratives that continue to shape society. If we're not able to recognize the power of narratives on society, and on us as individuals, we become passive consumers; we absorb narratives about ourselves, about other people, and about the way the world should work. My goal is to help students critically examine the narratives that surround them and decide: 'Do I believe in this or not? Do I want to accept this? Do I want to reject it? Do I want to change it?'"

In his interview with Education Week, Saxon provided valuable insights into his first year as a teacher, shedding light on the critical "make or break" period that many new educators face. The statistics indicating a high resignation rate among K-12 teachers within the first five years underscore the importance of this phase. Saxon's passion for teaching shines through as he discusses his journey towards becoming an educator and his genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of his students. Teaching students who are only a few years younger than him presents a unique set of challenges, but Saxon's understanding of their perspectives and ability to relate to them on a personal level helps bridge the age gap. Engaging teenagers in academic themes while competing with the constant distractions of social media is a challenge faced by all teachers in the digital age. Saxon's ability to tackle this issue head-on and find innovative ways to capture his students' attention demonstrates his adaptability and commitment to their educational growth. Awesome work Saxon! Saxon B.
Saxon Brown possesses a rare combination of childlike idealism and old soul pragmatism. Both traits have been incredibly useful for the English teacher's first year on the job.

57% of adult prisoners have literacy levels below those expected of an 11-year-old. At PeoplePlus we take a tailored approach to learning - treating everyone as an individual. We have employed Reading & Neurodiversity Specialists to give additional support to our learners. In this short clip one of those Specialists, Nicky talks about this approach and shares a short memory of one learner in his 30's who couldn't read, but with our help, was able to pass his English exams. https://lnkd.in/euUhSjf7

I recently led a workshop where the noise from next door interfered with my session. What you do to make sure ambient sounds are not distracting to participants? I’m writing about the topic in my next RtR message. Teach about anti racism WITHOUT using a long, hard-to-read book!! People disrespect picture books all day long. 😆 But not here! They can be used for really good and critical work all the way through high school, actually. Watch out for the post where I outline steps and ideas to keep in mind. In the Anti Racist Teacher course and workbook, I outline how to do this work in specific detail with practical strategies. DM us the word INFO so you can learn more. ✌🏾

I've discovered that a choral reading of worksheet answers has been an incredibly effective way to lower the affective filter for my remote adult ESL learners. They have to tell me what to type on my teacher's worksheet. Students learn that they can say an incorrect answer without shame and have the agency to correct the error on their own. I also think this unity has amplified the sense of community and connection in this digital space. Wanting to improve this practice, I went back to Reading Rockets. What a treasure! When teaching adult English learners, we must be careful to use age-appropriate materials. Most literacy resources are designed for children. Adults who are learning English need to be exposed to materials that are empowering, not infantilizing. As we revisit the methodology of top-down, academic adult education, it's fun to explore what works. #Universaleducation https://lnkd.in/gt_hTcyz
