As someone who strategizes with HR professionals every day, I think this article is spot-on in summarizing current HR struggles. It calls out the impact of inflation on employer budgets and its effect on hiring, retention, and morale. Elwood also found and recently reported that after compensation, flexibility is a top factor for career decisions. In fact, employees are willing to make significant trade-offs to obtain it—and maintain it. HR staffing levels can be challenging to understand and determine the right path - as there isn't a one size fits all approach. This SHRM article has interesting information and findings from both their own research and a recent ADP study. They found the “sweet spot” for most employers is between 1.5 and 4.5 HR staff per 100 employees. According to SHRM’s 2022 Human Capital Benchmark Report, the average HR staff to employee ratio is 1.7 per 100. The industry, expectations of the HR team, workforce characteristics, and turnover can all influence the appropriate number of HR professionals and the mix of specific roles. What is your HR ratio? ADP researchers also analyzed the correlation between HR staffing levels and employee turnover and found, perhaps unsurprisingly, that reduced HR staffing is accompanied by more employees leaving the organization. Turnover begins to fall when there is at least one HR staff member for every 200 employees, according to ADP.

The 2023-2024 SHRM State of the Workplace Report was released today and some of the stats are BONKERS. 🤯 81% of HR professionals state employee morale and engagement is their top focus for 2024. 58% of HR professionals shared their organizations faced the greatest hiring challenges in 2023. 70% of HR professionals shared that recruiting skilled workers is on the top priorities list for 2024. SHRM reports that staffing levels are unlikely to change this year, making recruiting and hiring THAT much more critical to alleviate and/or avoid existing employee burnout. …..AND less than 20% of HR executives will be adding headcount to their HR teams to help with the above. Aspire Talent Solutions is here to help HR, Hiring Managers, and Job Seekers.
