The San Francisco Muni Metro is finally moving beyond floppy disks! With a $212 million contract approved by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) board, Hitachi Rail will implement a modern control system to replace the 1990s tech currently running the city’s light rail. Since 1998, Muni Metro’s Automatic Train Control System has relied on 5¼-inch floppy disks for managing DOS software, but with support from Hitachi Rail over the next 20-25 years, the new system will be “five generations” ahead. This is just the beginning of a massive $700 million overhaul to modernize Muni’s infrastructure, which includes upgrading fragile loop cables to a Wi-Fi and cellular-based communication system. While the plan anticipates completion around 2033-2034, this step is crucial for both safety and efficiency, ensuring Muni is equipped for the demands of a modern urban transit system. Why should it be treated with great caution? Loops can happen. If information about routes is shared, packets can end up going in circles. Making people sad. Not taking the best routes. Redistribution done poorly can lead to data traveling along longer, slower routes, causing delays and frustration. It's like choosing the route with a view when you're in a hurry to get somewhere. Complexity. Large networks with many routers and lots of route redistribution being configuered can quickly become very complex to manage. A small configuration mistake can have big consequences. Can also make people sad. Important to think of tho; redistributed routes aren't always dangerous. When implemented properly by network engineers who carefully consider the points mentioned above, they provide essential flexibility and adaptability to networks. #Redistributedroutes #routing #CCNP

Post # 3 Dear Network Engineers, Today, I am sharing a problem commonly faced when configuring OSPF over GRE. PROBLEM: Continuous flapping of the GRE tunnel between two remote sites running OSPF with redistribution of other routes such as direct or static. As soon as OSPF reaches the FULL state, the GRE tunnel goes down, causing OSPF to drop as well. SOLUTION: This issue is mostly due to the destination address of the GRE tunnels being redistributed in OSPF on both sides. GRE tunnels flap when their destination address is learned by their own tunnel interface. To resolve this, the problematic redistribution needs to be removed. FIX/TIP: While redistributing routes, ensure that the source addresses of the GRE tunnels on either side are not advertised in OSPF. Basic Switching & Routing: When a host initiate communication with other host, some events happen 1. The source host check his arp table for the destination host mac address if they both are from same subnet 2. The source host check his arp table for the gateway mac address if they are from different subnets 3. If found the mac address, it forms the frame/packet and initiate the communication 4. If not found, then it generates arp and broadcast. If source and destination host both are from same subnet, the arp packet destination IP field contains actual destination host IP. But, if source and destination host are from different subnet, arp packet destination IP contains gateway IP. So, after completing the arp process, the packet's IP and MAC field contain below information and initiate communication. 1. Same Subnet/Switching: Source host IP+ MAC & Destination Host IP+MAC 2. Different Subnets/Routing: Source host IP+ MAC & Destination Host IP + Gateway MAC. And the source and destination MACs are being changed in each L3 hop. https://lnkd.in/gmCfc7vR
