Even though nearly half of ALL gamers are women, the gaming industry is still overwhelmingly male-dominated. Men make up 77% of video game developers. CAN VIDEO GAMES BE GOOD FOR KIDS? During last week's #PAXEast 2024, a roomful of people took time out of their gameplay to actively engage with our panel, "Unlocking the Positive Potential of Gaming for Kids & Teens". Moderated by the Lab's Research Manager Sam Schwamm, the panel featured a powerhouse team of Steph Hoechst of FableVision, Dr. Jason Kahn of Mightier, Chris James of Modulate, and our own Dr. David Bickham. Two key takeaways: THE IMPORTANCE OF VIDEO GAMES AS PLAYGROUNDS There were finger snaps and audible agreement from the crowd as the panelists shared the importance of games as playgrounds for kids to test boundaries, make safe mistakes, try out identities, and pursue key developmental milestones. VIDEO GAMES PROVIDE A RARE SPACE WHERE KIDS HAVE CONTROL Dr. Jason Kahn noted that video games are a rare space where kids have control — they can't decide whether or not to go to school or what the family will have for dinner, but in a gaming environment, they make the decisions and often know far more than the adults in their lives. Panelists also discussed some of the potential downsides of gaming, such as problematic use, in-game spending, and negative interactions with other players, as well as strategies for parents and other adults to help reduce these risks while encouraging positive gaming experiences. Finally, we answered questions from the audience about the use of VR and how to tap into the motivation that young people have when gaming.

🕹️The Future of Gaming is Accessibility!🎮 Scope’s latest report reveals a harsh truth: 66% of disabled gamers face barriers, with many purchasing games they can’t even play due to poor accessibility. This is unacceptable. Text-to-Speech (TTS) technology is a powerful solution, breaking down these barriers by turning in-game text into audio, opening up menus, dialogue, and stories for gamers with visual, cognitive, or mobility challenges. At ReadSpeaker, we provide the solution with our TTS SDK, available as plugins for Unity and Unreal Engine, enabling devopers to create truly inclusive games. 🦾✨ Read the Scope report here: https://lnkd.in/dr733FMt To learn more about ReadSpeaker and our TTS SDK: https://lnkd.in/dgcEVmm6 #Accessibility #Inclusion #TTS #Gaming #GameDev

Video games are enjoyed by a many people throughout Europe, in fact research shows that 53% of people in Europe (between the age of 6 - 64 y/o) play video games and 46% of them are women! New research on youth and gaming! Our study of Finnish adolescents suggests that the reasons for playing video games have a bigger impact on psychosocial well-being and academic buoyance than the amount of time spent playing.
