"𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐞..." The image below represents the top searches in Automotive on YouTube. Creating content about the automotive industry can be an opportunity, but the premise on which much of that content is being created is deeply concerning. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬: - Small Facilities Closing: More small automotive facilities are shutting down because they can't find the right help. - Dealership Technicians Leaving: Many dealer techs are leaving their well-paying jobs for various reasons and not joining the aftermarket. - Technicians Leaving the Repair Side: Non-dealer techs are also leaving the repair side of the industry in search of better opportunities. When they don't find them within automotive, other industries that require basic tools are eagerly hiring them. They offer respectable salaries, benefits, and sometimes even a car with a gas card. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐫𝐮𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: This situation is setting the stage for major disruption. Training enough robots to fix cars isn't a feasible solution. Automotive repair involves much more than just draining oil and torquing tires. The complexity and variety of tasks require skilled human technicians. As the industry faces these challenges, it's clear that significant changes are needed to attract and retain talent. Without addressing these issues, the future of automotive repair and maintenance looks uncertain and quite honestly... bleak. But I can fix my car. Can you fix yours? How do you think the industry should tackle these challenges? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

One in ten cars sold in 2023 in the U.S. were electric, according to an analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA). That means new electric car registrations in the U.S. increased by more than 28% from 2022. What’s more? A new LinkedIn's Economic Graph analysis shows that the electric vehicle- skilled workforce is growing alongside sales. The share of U.S. automotive industry workers with at least one electric vehicle related skill is 4.5%, meaning almost five out of every 100 auto industry workers possess skills like battery management systems and automotive engineering. That’s grown by almost 15% from 2023 to 2024. LinkedIn members who are adding these skills to their profiles are most likely to be based in certain metro areas, including Detroit, San Francisco and Los Angeles. This aligns with where electric vehicle heavyweights are based, including General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Tesla. How can employers best train talent for the EV transition? What EV-related skills should workers prioritize picking up? Weigh in below. ✍️: Taylor Borden 📊: Akash Kaura, LinkedIn's Economic Graph 📸: Getty Images
