Excellent summary and overview of the upcoming transition to #LEEDv5 by my colleague Prateek Jain. He discusses the promises and pitfalls in the Metropolis Magazine article below.
Curious about what's in store in the upcoming #LEEDv5 update? As a LEED proven provider, Atelier Ten has been in the forefront of reviewing the initial drafts of the updated standard. In an article published in the latest edition of Metropolis Magazine, Atelier Ten Associate, Prateek Jain unpacks the new requirements to capture the promises and pitfalls of LEED v5. For those in the AEC industry, this article is not to be missed!

"LEED v5 really meets the moment" - This was my first thought when I sat down to write a review of the new requirements for Metropolis Magazine in September 2024, shortly after the release of the second drafts by USGBC.
I can't quite characterize 'the moment' any more. The change in US governance has already seen partial mirroring in the corporate world with rollbacks of DEI programs, but thankfully decarbonization plans don't seem to have followed suit yet. Hurricane Helene and California's fires have thrust building resilience into national discourse, but the role of climate change remains politically fraught.
The big moves in LEED v5 still align with 'the moment'.
1. Developers pursuing LEED can't remain ambiguous on climate.
Projects must do holistic, 25-year projection of their emissions, quantify their embodied carbon, need to meet significantly more stringent energy standards, and get rewarded for electrification.
2. Equity requirements graduated to the mainstream.. but rolled back somewhat.
Assessment requirements debuted strong in the first drafts, but got some public backlash. They then morphed into more broadly palatable requirements in the second drafts. Sign of the times?
3. Resilience assessment is mandatory.
This topic had remained on the fringes of LEED like equity, and got a similar leg up. No ideological opposition here!
There's also simpler messaging and more flexibility in compliance approaches, but higher complexity in requirements and more work needed for certification overall. I dive into some of the details here: https://lnkd.in/gGV683GN
Many thanks to my wonderful colleagues at Atelier Ten who contributed to this research, and to Avinash Rajagopal and Francisco Brown for their patience and production!
Not many people using the underground walkway at Dulles International Airport - IAD have the time to absorb the exhibit showcasing the airport’s history. Of all the historical photos on display, this one is my favorite; it shows a young JFK, along with his predecessor President Eisenhower, at the inauguration of the airport in November 1962 (almost 62 years to the day of this post!) The photographer seems to have clicked right after a joke was cracked based on the facial expressions; one can imagine a sense of pride and optimism at the dedication of this building, functional infrastructure and beautiful architecture at the same time.
This to me is “civility in politics”, something that seems to be increasingly difficult to observe in today’s world. Imagine if JFK had stopped the construction of the airport because he didn’t like the design (particularly the mobile lounges? 😉) Or if he chose to not invite Eisenhower? Or insisted the airport be named not after Eisenhower’s secretary of state but rather himself?
This doesn’t mean there were no ideological differences between the two individuals, or their parties; but those were set aside when it came time to delivering something of benefit to the public. The limelight is not on either person, but rather the building that unites them; they understand that it will outlast them both.
A small reminder as the current and future President meet today to begin (yet another) transition of power in the nation’s history, as another (much bigger) transition looms in the background
#Webuild metro stations interpret the existing dialogue between past and present, the territory, art and engineering know-how.
An extraordinary fusion of contemporary art and modern infrastructure for urban mobility, for a city model tailored for man that continually searches for balance between technique and beauty.

A safe system approach is not complete without appropriate speed limits. It why I’m proud that in the Netherlands, after years of careful considerations, we now have a new road category that is suitable for multimodal traffic in urban environments. A big positive step forwards after all, safe speeds do save lives.
After years of successful experience with 30km/h zones in residential zones and pedestrian and cycle dominated areas we now too have possibilities to create a road network with multimodal access roads with fitting speed limits of 30km/h.
Royal HaskoningDHV has now got the experience to analyse and design a road network from a holistic view which considers the interest of various stakeholders and perspectives, such as the public transport impacts, the cycle and pedestrian community and driver behaviour.
Curious? Look at our projects in a Dutch traffic context. N.b. you need to ask your browser to translate this work is still under way however we don’t want to withhold you these examples.
