While the DOE has invested in social studies specific to solar siting and permitting, I can see how the results of these studies could be used in industries outside of renewable energy to understand and strategize around NIMBYism on all kinds of infrastructure projects. I look forward to the results!

While growth in solar and wind generation is encouraging, early progress is tempered by significant challenges. Achieving statewide clean energy mandates is dependent on local permitting structures and politics. Anyone who has tried to site a major development – from a retail complex to a housing development to a landfill – will tell you that gaining the needed zoning approvals and permits to start construction is an expensive and arduous process. It is made even more risky by the reality that gaining the necessary local approvals often does not depend on the need for or quality of the project. There is a clear case for making changes to the way renewable energy projects are reviewed and approved.

31 million acres to develop solar fields with 29 gigawatts of power. Impressive? Not so fast. These will produce approx. 2.9 gWh of power annually. In an earlier post it was noted that the data center boom, when coupled with the planned migration to all EVs will require an additional generating capability of 1.7 million gWh of above the current US generating capacity. This reserved land area, which is approximately the size of Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Vermont combined, will yield about 0.00017% of the anticipated future demand. Something to think about. From my perspective, our resources might be more effectively used if devoted to small modular reactors.
