For this Black History Month and beyond keep these things in mind. 1. Black History is more than just Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Use your platform to celebrate the vast intersectionalities of Blackness and honor those mentioned and those who don't get the attention they deserve. 2. Move beyond performative action to shift policies that negatively impact Black employees. That means reviewing hiring practices, performance management policies, and even benefits to ensure that you are creating a space that is accessible and inclusive. 3. Center the narratives of those most impacted. Understanding our stories doesn't mean you have a role in validating or invalidating our experiences. Our experiences exist and are valid because they are ours. Your job is to get out of the way to allow those with contextual expertise to be centered. 4. Keep it cute. If you don't know, it's okay to be quiet, listen, and do your own work. No one is asking you to be an expert in the experiences of Black folks,’ but you learn more when you listen than when you talk. 5. Lastly, Black History is 365 (366 this year) days. Our history is engrained in this country, and without our story and our experiences, you wouldn't have a complete narrative. When creating this post, we took a pause. As a team, we reflected on how our industry in social media marketing has continually missed the mark on authentic solidarity with our Black siblings // . At Obtain, we're committed to continuous learning and striving to be better allies individually and as an organization. How do we do this? Through choosing diverse authors for our team book club — this month, we're reading "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett, engaging in team knowledge shares and training (including sessions led by our very own Meghan Montelibano-Gorman, who is a DEI consultant), and not be scared to "not know" while seeking out authentic, non-performative answers // . This Black History Month, let's challenge ourselves and fellow marketers to do better or to do more. Here are a few ways to amplify Black voices: 1️⃣ Actively listen and share Black stories 2️⃣ Elevate Black creators and businesses 3️⃣ Promote diverse perspectives in your content . Phew! The year is flying by and we are already more than halfway through February. If you are swimming upstream and haven’t yet had the chance to celebrate Black History Month with your organization, it's not too late! Strong, inclusive cultures need ongoing investments and the middle of the month is the perfect time to showcase your commitment to DEI. To help you along your journey, here are some questions you might consider: - How does your organization seek out the opportunity to amplify Black voices? - When does your organization engage in meaningful dialogue about inequities? - Where can you incorporate more education, celebration, and/or action? As we approach Black History Month most Black leaders start to get these messages in their inbox and it’s quite insulting: “Hello X, We love what you are doing and would love to have you speak about your experiences to our group as we are committed (insert eyeroll) to diversity and inclusion as a pillar of our mission” Here’s the truth 1. YOUR organization is NOT committed as you would not have to reach out every year for BHM. 2. Doing something to check off the boxes will NEVER change anything or anyone. And the MOST important part of this message is that companies will ask for your time but will NOT pay an equitable fee. Research shows that Professional Black speakers are paid 45-60% less than others. So moral of the story: ~If you don’t want lasting change do not reach out. ~Pay the fees as you would for any person.
