Interesting article: in thinking about statistics and what/how libraries collect and use (yes, I actually think about this... maybe more than I should! #geeklife), I appreciate this use of real world data to learn about our community's needs and explore helping with the root problems - not just about punishing behavior. So much of what we count isn't actionable and doesn't make a difference in our big-picture design and decision-making. Also makes me wonder what kinds of behaviors and uses are happening in my own library that could tell us something new - and do we have the tools to collect that information? Thanks Maura Deedy!
The most stolen books from San Francisco Public Library shelves are not the hottest new novels or juicy memoirs, they are books about recovering from addiction. Now, city officials want to provide universal access to free drug recovery books, including Alcoholics Anonymous’ 12-step recovery book. San Francisco City Supervisor Matt Dorsey on Tuesday introduced legislation to expand a pilot program to distribute addiction recovery books for free at the city's 28 public libraries. The library launched a pilot program last April to distribute such materials at the main library and two branches. Since then, they have distributed more than 3,200 books about beating addiction. City Librarian Michael Lambert said the library so far has spent about $40,000 on the pilot program. “The city and county of San Francisco, like many urban environments, is seeing a lot of individuals who are struggling with addiction, substance abuse disorder, so we recognize there was an opportunity for the public library to do our part,” he said. We are excited to bring the Terminator Run for Youth Addiction Awareness to Winnipeg, taking a significant step forward in addressing the urgent crisis of youth addiction and mental health across Canada. More than just awareness, the Terminator Run is a powerful call to action in a country where 60% of illicit drug users are between the ages of 15 and 24, and overdose deaths continue to rise. In 2015, amidst this growing crisis, Vanisha Breault stood up to make a difference. Driven by her own challenging experiences with her daughter's battle against addiction to fentanyl, meth, and heroin, Vanisha founded the Terminator Run for Youth Addiction Awareness. Vanisha's story is one of courage and resilience, turning personal anguish into a collective fight against the stigma and isolation that many families face. She established the Terminator Run for Youth Addiction to not only raise awareness but also to catalyze significant change and forge a community built on hope and strength. Today, the Terminator Foundation stands as a beacon of hope, embodying the triumph of the human spirit. With each story of recovery and every athlete's effort, we deepen our commitment to those battling addiction. The Winnipeg event aims to extend this mission, mobilizing local support and resources to tackle youth addiction head-on. Our goal for the Winnipeg Terminator Run is to establish a solid presence in the community, paving the way for expanding our life-changing program both in Winnipeg and across the nation. Every contribution supports this expansion, helping us bring hope and recovery to more youths and families affected by addiction. Join us in this crucial movement. Whether you're a participant, volunteer, or supporter, your involvement is vital. Together, we can transform the landscape of youth addiction in Canada, turning challenges into victories and despair into hope. More people in the industry demand an accountability. We need the biometrics of decision-makers and if they’re drinking too much alcohol, they should no longer be involved and anybody that makes a living off of making living off of “Medical Abstinence” (pills for depression that don’t even add up because serotonin’s not relative) should be checked, biometricly investigate, and see if their decisions of being abstinent is balanced enough to be called sobriety. Too many people are failing treatment to be calling themselves sober or in sobriety, as that term does not define as abstinence and the people that think it does are the one that need the disease, otherwise where are they going to retire? They’re into the disease forever. This share is proof that they take young people telling them to act like they’re good and sober and use them as sales tools and even the industry itself can’t stop it not one person‘s been able to stop it. It used to be you should be punished for this for treating a Homosapien like a slave, but for some reason, the disease people just keep working.

"It is important that addiction treatment and recovery community organizations provide a process of informed consent when inviting individuals to share their stories in public and professional contexts. This involves a clear statement of the potential benefits and risks of public disclosure and screening out individuals for whom such disclosures present an unacceptable level of risk. Asking individuals currently receiving services to participate in public story sharing or marketing activities is coercive and exploitive."

How Legislation Affects Addiction Treatment Options Day 4 of our series delves into how recent legislation impacts addiction treatment options and our legal strategies. At McGuigan Legal and Second Chance Interventions, staying abreast of legal changes is crucial for advocating effectively and ensuring that our clients receive the best possible care under current laws. Recent legislative changes have brought both challenges and opportunities in the field of addiction treatment. For instance, expansions in healthcare coverage have made certain types of addiction treatment more accessible, while new privacy laws have changed how medical information can be shared between providers and legal teams. Our role extends beyond the courtroom and client meetings; we actively engage with legislators to advocate for laws that prioritize recovery and provide fair treatment for all individuals struggling with addiction. This includes pushing for policies that support comprehensive treatment options as alternatives to incarceration, which not only aid in recovery but also help reduce the overcrowding of the justice system. A recent success involves the amendment of a state law, which now recognizes addiction as a treatable condition, advocating for medical and therapeutic interventions rather than punitive measures. Our involvement helped to shape this legislation, ensuring that legal strategies are better aligned with modern understanding of addiction as a health issue. Join us tomorrow for the concluding post of our series, where we reflect on the transformative power of legal advocacy in addiction recovery. #Legislation #AddictionTreatment #LegalAdvocacy #PolicyChange #McGuiganLegal #SecondChanceInterventions
