May is Jewish American Heritage Month when "we celebrate the immeasurable impact of Jewish values, contributions, and culture on our Nation’s character and recommit to realizing the promise of America for all Jewish Americans." Please join me in recognizing the contribution of Jewish Americans to the fabric of our nation and its culture and read a bit more in the White House's proclamation which tells of the contribution of the Jewish Community to the United States of America: "In 1654, a small band of 23 Jewish refugees fled persecution abroad and sailed into the port of modern-day New York City. They fought for religious freedom, helping define one of the bedrock principles upon which our Nation was built. Jewish American culture has been inextricably woven into the fabric of our country. Jewish American suffragists, activists, and leaders marched for civil rights, women’s rights, and voting rights. Jewish American scientists, doctors, and engineers have made scientific breakthroughs that define America as a land of possibilities. They have served our Nation in uniform, on the Nation’s highest courts, and at the highest levels of my Administration. As public servants, artists, entertainers, journalists, and poets, they have helped write the story of America, making it — as Emma Lazarus’ poem on the Statue of Liberty states — a home for the “huddled masses yearning to breathe free. https://lnkd.in/d_8Dn669 #Equity #Community #Inclusion #Diversity #Americans #JewishAmericanHeritageMonth #JewishAmericans #WhiteHouse

#History On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that all people being held as slaves would henceforth be free. Two years later, on January 31, 1865, the 13th Amendment was passed by Congress. Yet, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers finally arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas, with the long-awaited news of freedom. This day, now celebrated as #Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day, commemorates the emancipation of African American slaves. While we celebrate this monumental day, it’s important to recognize that June 19th, 1865, was not the day that all slaves were freed. As a national organization, Latina Professionals represents a diverse range of voices, identities, and experiences. Did you know that #Juneteenth is the oldest known holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the US? It’s a time of honor and celebration, but also a time of reflection, representation and recognition of the cultural heritage, endurance and historical significance of Blacks and African Americans. #Juneteenth2024

One of our core values is inclusivity so we were honored to design this artwork for our client as a way to celebrate and honor #Juneteenth.⁠ June 19th or “Juneteenth” is an important day in African-American history. Juneteenth or Freedom Day is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of ending slavery in the United States. This holiday is considered the longest-running African-American holiday and has been called America’s second Independence Day. It was on June 19, 1865, that Union soldiers, led by Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, landed in Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and all slaves were free. This was 2 ½ years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which become official on January 1, 1863. As graphic designers, we always have to educate ourselves on the clients, products, and topics we are asked to design for. Though this project, we were able to broaden our knowledge and awareness of Juneteenth- and in knowing more, we can DO more. We all have the responsibility to do our part in working toward a better future for all. Haiti, Freedom, and French Colonialism I read CLR James's "The Black Jacobins" as an undergraduate at Cornell and it changed my life. James paints a true picture of how the French Revolution impacted Haiti and slavery in the Americas. The narrative that whites ended slavery is inherently false: rather, the actions of Toussaint Louverture and many others forced the issue of slavery. Revisionist historians are overly fond of the notion that whites, seeing the error of their ways, chose to abandon slavery. Even after the decolonization of its empire, France -- the land of "Liberté, égalité, fraternité" -- continues to control its former colonies in ways that the larger world fails to fully comprehend. Imperialist monetary policies from Paris continue to cripple domestic economies and undermine democracy. Colonialism in Africa won’t have meaningfully come to an end until true economic sovereignty is allowed to flourish.

As Memorial Day approaches, let us pause to reflect on the profound significance of this solemn holiday. As we gather with loved ones, let us remember and honor the valor of those who have served our nation, sacrificing their lives in the name of freedom and justice. Originating as Decoration Day after the Civil War, this day holds deep historical roots. It was born amidst a nation torn apart by conflict and loss, yet a tradition of remembrance and reverence emerged from that turmoil. Many may not know that the first organized commemoration of fallen American soldiers occurred on May 1, 1865, in Charleston, SC. Organized by resilient Black Americans, this act of homage amidst their struggle for justice and equality exemplifies the courage and honor woven into the tapestry of Black history. As we observe Memorial Day, let us honor the past, celebrate the present, and commit to shaping a brighter future. Let us draw strength from the lessons of history and embrace the spirit of unity and resilience that defines us as a nation.
