Recent findings from The Times shed light on the urgent need for improved care for "looked after" children, a cause close to our hearts at The For Baby's Sake Trust. Data reveals concerning trends in the privatised residential care sector, where costs are soaring while quality often lags behind. Shockingly, the average annual cost of a private residential placement is £281,000, with significant profit margins for operators. Meanwhile, the number of children placed with foster families is declining, exacerbating the crisis. The impact on #YoungPeople is profound, with many experiencing disruptions to their #Education, #MentalHealth challenges, and increased vulnerability to homelessness and exploitation. It's clear that urgent action is needed to address these systemic issues and ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable children. At The For Baby's Sake Trust, we advocate for investment in not-for-profit local provision and early intervention strategies to support families and prevent children from entering #Care unnecessarily. It's time to prioritise the wellbeing of our most vulnerable children and ensure they can thrive. Read more: https://bit.ly/3Ilnz1H

As the Chair of Fair Agenda’s Board, I am so proud of our movement’s work to secure better support for people who are victim-survivors of sexual assault. Right now, the criminal legal system is often unresponsive, insensitive and re-traumatising; and our systems leave too many victim-survivors without the service supports they need for their wellbeing and healing. We desperately need transformative reform. And achieving that is going to require focused and consistent campaigning and pressure. One of the reasons the Fair Agenda movement can hold governments to account is because we are independent. Instead, the ongoing work and impact of our movement is supported generously by thousands of people who share our vision of a safe and just future. So, as we approach the end of the financial year, I’m hoping you will join me in chipping in what you can to help improve responses to sexual violence. Right now there’s a critical moment of opportunity to secure change. The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) are conducting an inquiry into justice system responses to sexual violence, and our movement is using this inquiry to build momentum for action to address three important problems: - The fact that many victim-survivors can’t access forensic medical examinations when and where they need them - Laws that mean victim-survivors in multiple states don’t have the option to share their testimony in a more trauma-informed way, and - Government decisions that mean key specialist services aren’t funded to help all the victim-survivors who would benefit from them. I joined Fair Agenda’s board team because I want to live in a world that is gender equal and where everyone has access to their rights. That means tackling systems that drive gender injustice. Too often, our movement’s work to create a safer future is limited because we don’t have enough money. It’s so important that our movement delivers on this opportunity for impact in the coming months - and the contributions from people like you and me that will determine what we can do. I hope you will join me and donate. https://lnkd.in/g8Xb5wYy

We love celebrating community partners like the team at the Cridge Centre for the Family in Victoria, British Columbia. Tori Dach coordinates their Intimate Partner Violence and Brain Injury Program, and kindly agreed to share a little about herself. 🧠 Where are you from? Victoria, BC 🧠 What is your area of study/expertise? Brain Injury Program Development and Service Delivery 🧠 What do you do in your research/work? I explore and execute ways in which women living with a brain injury as a result of intimate partner violence can receive brain-injury informed support services focused on improving daily living activities. 🧠 Why does it matter? Because when brain injury is factored into healing and recovery plans, support includes navigating how they brain processes information differently post-injury. 🧠 What is one thing you think everyone needs to know about BI in IPV? That it is so incredibly prevalent. And once we know that we can't un-know it, opening our minds to creative and innovative ways to do things differently leading to more safe and successful outcomes for survivors. Thanks to Tori and her colleagues for doing such great work to support surviors of IPV-BI!

Wiradjuri/Yorta Yorta | Chief Executive Officer | Non Executive Director | Change Maker | Aboriginal Rights Advocate | Women’s Rights Advocate | Truth Teller
Voice, Truth, Treaty. Three words that underpin some of the fundamentals of our Family Preservation program which is designed to empower our families to take back control of their present and their future. Talking about the truth of the harm of past government policies that still impact our families today is critical. These historical and ongoing issues that continue to disempower Aboriginal people need to be talked about. The story of parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles fighting to keep their children at home; whether it be due to the inherent racism that plagues the decisions made by the child protection department or their own personal battles of transgenerational trauma resulting in current challenges alongside their undying dedication to be change makers for themselves and their children, needs to be told. Its is the truth. And we are very proud of our mum in this story being brave enough to go public and talk about her journey in taking back her power. Accountability on every level is critical to make change. Further investment in ACCO’s who can facilitate these outcomes is not just the truth, but is without question, a necessity. https://lnkd.in/gjxcFu3p

Today's report from the Oireachtas Sub Committee on Children highlights the a direct correlation between advocacy and action. For a committee of this stature to call for "separate funding of no less than €25m immediately for community and voluntary organisations, such as Jigsaw" and to acknowledge that we are "key to early intervention and prevention" is really positive and highlights the work of all our advocates across the organisation. More funding is needed so badly and this money must be ring-fenced for supports are early, so that we, and others, can implement plans that will make a difference. https://lnkd.in/eQWBT4nt

International Day of Non-Violence - 2 October 2024 The principle of non-violence, also known as non-resistance, is about decreasing the use of physical violence in order to achieve political and social change in the world. This day is about saying no to violence in order to obtain something, and represents equality, respect, peace and justice. In reference to intentionally using physical force for the purposes of discipline or punishment is our upcoming episode on corporal punishment with Linda Savage. Linda is a passionate advocate about abolishing the use of violence in the form of corporal punishment and that children deserve to feel safe. Raising awareness on this international day of non-violence poses wider implications and validates that physical force is never acceptable. We believe this day carries an important message that we must maintain a peaceful society for our future generation. In doing so, we protect our children and teach them that violence is not an answer, nor should be used as a way to attain something. This is a method of achieving progressive and social change with dignity, a significant lesson we should all be teaching our children to continue raising families safely. Best Interests Podcast is passionate about keeping children safe and happy, and we are committed to finding ways to eliminate the exposure of violence around children and in the community.
