It's #MentorshipMonday, and as I reflect on my experiences, I've had the privilege of being both a mentee and a mentor. During my internship at a DNA laboratory in Kaduna, I was fortunate to be guided by three seasoned research experts - Mallam Usman Shanono, Mrs Ramlat and Mrs Amina. Initially, everything felt overwhelming and far beyond my grasp, especially given my lack of hands-on research experience. However, I chose to stay open to learning. Over time, I gained valuable insights, from understanding the intricacies and dynamic nature of research to mastering essential skills like humility, critical thinking, and problem-solving. During the pandemic, I had the opportunity to mentor over twenty young students, helping them sharpen their quantitative reasoning and build a strong foundation for lifelong learning. My goal was to equip them with critical skills that would give them confidence and keep their minds engaged, avoiding stagnation during the lockdown. Mentorship is a two-way street. As a mentor, you share your knowledge, experience, and network to broaden the mentee's skills and perspective. You also help them set clear goals and guide them in working towards these goals. As a mentee, you gain invaluable insights from your mentor, which enable you to make informed decisions, work smarter, and face challenges with grit and a growth mindset. So, I encourage you to take that first step—reach out to someone in your field whom you admire and ask for their guidance to help you grow. I have read a lot of literature on Networking Up and finding mentors who are above your weight class but we don’t talk enough about #networking/mentoring among peers. Peer #mentoring means connecting with individuals in a similar age group and/or experience level as yourself. Here are some benefits I’ve experienced: 1️⃣ Easily accessible - Unlike directors/VPs/heads who are hard to get in touch with and always strapped for time, a group of peer mentors is easily accessible and willing to engage in conversations. You can have several peer mentors who supplement each other. 2️⃣ Comfortable yet enlightening conversations - There is a certain comfort level that comes with talking to peers. You don’t always have to be “ON” and think of the next smart question to ask. It is also easier to receive feedback and learn from each other. If you are new to networking it might be easier to start out here. 3️⃣ Exchanging information, experience and resources - When you have been through similar experiences— being in the same internship program or navigating a rough job market— you can appreciate each other’s journeys and share resources and advice to navigate situations better. 4️⃣ Witnessing someone’s journey - Peer mentoring offers you the opportunity to witness someone’s growth and learn alongside them. Peer mentors are the equivalent of study buddies at school. They accelerate your growth and learning and become your support circle. Have you tried peer mentoring/networking? What advice do you have for interns who are struggling to establish themselves? ✏️ Advice: Self-learning is the most valuable kind of learning. Try to support yourself as much as possible. Look for help from other interns and older colleagues, many of whom will be happy to teach you if you approach them. Don't limit yourself to a single mentor. #confidence is a key to #success.
