Many thanks to Susan McGinnell from Cushman & Wakefield - Formerly DTZ for taking the time to visit her former secondary school, St. Mac Dara’s in Templeogue, as well as Old Bawn Community School in Tallaght. Susan and I shared our insights with students about the exciting and diverse career opportunities in surveying and highlighted the benefits of being a member of the SCSI - Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland The students were particularly interested in learning about: - The 12 different types of surveyors, ensuring there’s something to suit everyone’s interests. - The median salary of €77,199 across all surveying roles and levels. (Based on our 2023 salary survey) - Attainable CAO points with courses available nationwide. - An internationally recognised qualification. - The variety the profession offers — surveying isn’t just a desk job; it gets you out and about! Are you waiting for the perfect job to come along? Stop waiting – and start taking control. Yesterday, I spoke with two Chartered Building Surveyors – one recently Chartered, the other at Associate level. Both were considering a move but waiting for the “right” role to come along. Sound familiar? Here’s the problem: waiting for the right role means leaving your career to chance. Both of these Building Surveyors are in high demand, but the idea of relying on job ads or waiting for opportunities essentially puts someone else’s priorities ahead of your own. There’s a better way to approach this. Start with you. Ask yourself: ✅ What do you need in your next role? ✅ What will move your career forward? ✅ What aligns with your personal goals? When you focus on what you want rather than what appears to be on offer, you take control of your search. So, stop waiting for luck to land the perfect job in your lap. Be intentional. Take charge and find it. If you’d like help creating a tailored approach to your job search, get in touch. I’d be happy to guide you every step of the way. #mrics #rics #charteredbuildingsurveyor #surveyorjobs HD Surveyors Ltd

It’s a major step up, and while we can't fault the candidate, it’s hard to refuse when the salary rises from £80k to £120k. In the past year, we’ve noticed significant differences in why people move across the UK. We’ve identified four key questions to explore further to better understand these motivations.” · Career Growth & Development -28% · Better Salary & Package - 29% · Work-Life-Balance - 28% · Culture & Working Environment - 16%

The Building Surveyor Shortage: A Growing Challenge in the UK As a recruiter primarily specialising in building surveyor roles, I’ve witnessed firsthand the increasing demand for skilled professionals in this field—and the widening gap between demand and supply. But the issue goes far beyond just building surveyors. Even hands-on tradespeople—essential to maintaining and developing our built environment—are in short supply. Sadly, these roles are often overlooked because they’re not seen as “glamorous” careers. This stigma is costing us dearly, as fewer young people are pursuing these critical trades. The result? We’re facing the loss of an entire generation of skilled professionals, and the impact on the construction and property sectors could be devastating. From delayed projects to rising costs, the ripple effects of this skills gap are being felt across the UK. Some key factors contributing to these shortages include: -An aging workforce without enough new talent stepping in. - A lack of awareness and promotion of career paths in trades and surveying. -Perceived lack of prestige compared to office-based roles. But it’s not too late. Solutions are within reach: Investing in apprenticeships and practical training for trades and surveyors. Changing the narrative around these professions to highlight their value and importance. Offering flexible and rewarding career opportunities to attract new talent. #BuildingSurveyors #Tradespeople #SkillsShortage #ConstructionIndustry #TurnerPropertyRecruitment

The UK construction industry is currently experiencing several developments that significantly impact recruitment, underscoring the importance of engaging recruitment specialists: 1. Labour Shortages and Skills Gaps The industry faces a substantial labour shortage, with an estimated need for over 250,000 additional construction workers by 2028 to meet demand. This shortage is exacerbated by the decline in the construction workforce from 2.6 million in 2008 to 2.1 million in 2023. 2. Wage Growth and Hiring Trends Recent data indicates that UK wage growth has stabilized at 4.8%, with hiring showing signs of stalling. This trend suggests a cautious approach among employers, potentially affecting the availability of skilled labour in the construction sector. 3. Apprenticeships and Future Workforce Development Many construction companies are investing in apprenticeships to build a more sustainable workforce and address skills shortages. Apprenticeships offer practical solutions to fill skills gaps and prepare the industry for future demands. 4. Economic Uncertainty and Hiring Hesitation Economic uncertainties, such as impending budgets and policy changes, have led UK businesses to pause hiring, reflecting concerns over future economic stability. This hesitation can impact the construction sector's ability to attract and retain talent. Why do you need a recruitment specialist now more than ever? Given these challenges, recruitment specialists are crucial in navigating the complex construction labour market. At DCT Recruitment, we offer! Many years ago, on my first day as a trainee surveyor, I was given two things to read: the firm's staff handbook and a copy of that week's Estates Gazette. In those days it was a substantial publication, with over a hundred pages, full of news, views, features and adverts (lots of adverts) for properties of all types and sizes. I don't remember anything from the staff handbook. Like many, I was shocked on Friday to learn of the demise of this great publication and, over the weekend, have been thinking about possible implications for the industry. In my mind, the closure of EG raises important questions about transparency, market intelligence, and how much more difficult it will be for property businesses to promote themselves without the 'Property Bible'. You don't know what you've got until it's gone. So I wrote a blog. You can read it here: https://bit.ly/41phpsr

“The largest loss in #construction #employment since the recent peak in 2019 Q1 has been in #selfemployment, primarily older age-demographic #workers in #specialisttrades, which is why it has not got as much media coverage as if it was mainly job losses at major #housebuilders and tier one #contractors. Self-employment in construction in 2024 Q1 was 1.5% lower than in 2023 Q4 and 21.9% lower (217,200 fewer self-employed UK construction workers) than in 2019 Q1. #apprenticeship #development #economy #propertymaintenance https://lnkd.in/grXWn4DF
