Surveyors – Here’s why you should never send your CV to a recruiter unless you know who you’re dealing with. Here is why: Earlier this year I was working with a talented and motivated Surveyor. He had great qualifications and solid experience for his level, and he was really keen to work for a specific consultancy. The role was perfect – a great package, a broad range of work and all the support he needed to progress, and he was the perfect fit. However, when I spoke to the Head of Surveying he said “He sounds perfect, but I’ve received his CV from at least 6 recruiters. I’m not interested in speaking to him”. He then went on to say that he believed how someone approaches their job search tells you something about them as a person. And as far as he was concerned, a candidate who lets multiple recruiters send a CV to a potential employer appears disorganised and even a bit desperate. Now you know as well as I do that this isn’t the case. But the unfortunate truth is, a lot of employers don’t know how some unscrupulous recruiters operate. In this case, the candidate had no idea his CV had been sent out to employers. He simply sent his CV to these recruiters in good faith to open a discussion. The recruiters then sent the CV out without even speaking with him and certainly without his consent. Of course, the recruiters are in the wrong here, but it’s the candidate who suffered. At this point I could say that “I do things differently” and promise to never send your CV to an employer without your explicit permission… … but I won’t. Why? Anyone can say anything on the internet, and I’ll bet you’ve heard that one before. So instead of saying I’m different, I’ll SHOW you I’m different. Here’s how I’ll do it: When you contact me to talk about your next Surveying job, I don’t want you to send me your CV. What’s more, I’ll only ask for it once we’ve discussed what you want to achieve and how I can help you get there. When you’re ready and comfortable to take things forward, we can proceed.
