A story on why clinicians need to know costs of their orders more than anyone. The acquisition cost of rectal indomethacin has gone up from $2 a dose to $325 a dose. The ASGE guidelines state there is a 50% reduction in post ERCP pancreatitis amongst all-comers undergoing ERCP making it a recommendation. It is unsustainable to use this medication on every patient undergoing an ERCP. What if I am merely exchanging a stent? What if the patient has had a sphincterotomy and I'm going to place a pancreatic stent? What if my rate of post ercp pancreatitis is low and I do 300+ ERCP's per year? Giving clinicians the cost data, the clinical synopses, and empowering them at the point-of-care is the essence of clinical-financial decision support.
