I often step outside of my niche because it fuels my growth and creativity. 💪 Exploring diverse projects not only broadens my skill set but also challenges me to think differently and find innovative solutions. By venturing into unfamiliar territory, I expand my network, connect with new people, and open doors to exciting opportunities. In the FMCG and Automotive industry it is normal for managers to move onto new roles every 3 years. During that time they might take on new tasks or activities, achieve new goals and complete new projects. This is most often displayed in their CV, LinkedIn profile and page and yet the photo that they might have had taken 4-5 years ago stays the same. I have seen lots of young professionals who despite having worked hard, completed many new projects and been committed to advancing their career still have their Graduation portrait from university as their Profile photo. They are need to show that the experience and expertise they have gained correlates to the image they are showing of themselves. This also applies to to more senior management who have moved from one company to another and the branded background of the office wall does not relate to their present position. For some people every 12 months they need to have a fresh portrait to represent the new position they are in. How many companies still use the photo that was taken of their employees when they started 5 years later? Does your company profile photo new updating? Do you still have a University Graduation portrait as your profile image and yet your work experience tells a different story? Have you moved to a new company and want to show your colleagues & connections the advancement in your career? I've read about 500 job descriptions, so you don't have to. "We welcome candidates from diverse professional backgrounds" is a common statement in company blurbs. But scrolling down these same candidates often need specific and substantial experience in that particular industry. There seems to be a hesitancy to recruit talent from diverse professional backgrounds and other industries. 🤔 Whilst in this economy it's understandable to prioritize industry experience and you could argue that businesses don't need to recruit outside their industry because of it, I do think those businesses are missing a huge opportunity. Recruiting someone from a different industry can bring a completely different perspective that often far outweighs the slightly longer time they may need to get up to speed with industry nuances and jargon. Most industries are influenced by others. Here’s some examples: 🚗 Automotive and 👠 Fashion: The sleek lines, bold colors, and futuristic designs found in automotive engineering often influence fashion designers seeking inspiration for their collections. BALENCIAGA Ralph Lauren and more recently a post-MOSCHINO Jeremy Scott have all found runway inspiration from cars. In the same way, fashion trends and luxury materials like alcantara suede and carbon fiber frequently find their way into car interiors and accessories. 🛫 Aerospace and 🏚 Architecture: The innovative structural designs and materials used in aerospace engineering have inspired architects like Zaha Hadid & Norman Foster in their building designs. Concepts such as lightweight construction, aerodynamics, and sustainable technologies from aerospace can be applied to architectural projects, leading to groundbreaking structures and sustainable urban development. 🦐 Food and 👗 Fashion: Food and drinks have been a playground for a lot of luxury brands over recent years - Fendi, Prada Group and Dior are a few, with Louis Vuitton being one of the latest to open The Place in Bangkok, a "multi-faceted experiential building" home to a LV cafe, among other things. And you only have to look at some of the world's top restaurants to see they are inherently influenced by fashion. The list goes on, but the point is that innovation often stems from the collision of conflicting ideas and approaches. I've thought a lot recently about the message behind Balenciaga's latest show, exploring the notion that creativity is the new luxury. I think businesses that adopt a transdisciplinary approach have the potential to be the most creative, and that applies to talent acquisition too. His works possess the extraordinary power to instill in viewers a sense of awe, peace, happiness, hopefulness, and deep contemplation, creating a highly significant emotional impact and that is just in 1 painting. 😀   A job search can invoke similar emotions like anticipation, uncertainty, hopefulness, determination, and purpose. Monet struggled in his career, but his unwavering dedication and passion saw him paint what are now considered masterpieces. Similarly, job seekers face rejections, setbacks, and extended searches until they obtain that new job or defining career moment that makes everything worthwhile.   Finishing a painting and getting that job offer can bring about a profound feeling of happiness and fulfillment. Don't give up. Why resilience is important when applying for fashion designer roles. I read somewhere on LinkedIn that, "you’ll never get paid for effort". Here is why I disagree. As humans, our most valuable lessons come from moments of failure. You fail fast. You learn fast. As a fashion designer you mostly see jobs with over 100 applicants, which is often discouraging, so you put less effort in your applications. Do not fall for into the trap. Put in the effort, tailor your applications and the best way to do so is by being highly selective of the opportunities you apply for. However, this is to only get you an interview. The process could still be long. For example, its more common to experience a process as follows: Company A: Rejected 1st stage Company B: Rejected 3rd stage Company C: Rejected 1st stage Company D: Rejected - 2nd Pick. Company K: Job Offer Trust me. I know how it feels. 2022 I was rejected at the 5th and final stage for two different vacancies. Each of those failed interviews is in its own way a preparation for the next one. And this goes for anything: Put in the effort to see things through. Learn the valuable lessons Watch your value as a person go up. With patience you’ll reap the rewards too.
